The replies are the normal on again and off again replies about this for the last several years.
Ok I will put it quite simply. Kmail will not get into Gmail and it will not get into the Office 365 cloud through which the college works. However, Thunderbird will. I have fiddled and fiddled and fiddled with Kmail for YEARS all one has to do is read my dozens of "how to fix this" at Kubuntu to review my work. But.... yet again............it doesn't work. I have ESCHEWED Thunderbird and have bit my tongue and went through the college's e-mail and gmail because I am a good fanboi of KDE But this just does it.... Again.........quite simply........I can enter exactly the same settings over and over and over again into Kmail, with the exception that Kmail does not provide START/TLS it provides the separate buttons but not the combined ones...... The invariable reply is........well the college is not compliant. I am tired of that just plain tired of it. It is a COLLEGE and it works through MS365 cloud so I would say that....it is compliant. WHY would a college NOT be compliant? I am well known to the college IT department because I have helped them in no small way on several things.....they like me... They sent me the "original settings" years ago when it was on their servers. and Kmail worked for a while and then .......just nothing.... When they migrated to Office365 they sent me the "new" settings which are.....the same settings! except for the "address" which now goes through Office365 instead of directly to the college. and.........they require start/tls..... hmm Tbird does it.... So......after fiddling with Kmail for the WHOLE SUMMER....maybe an update.....maybe they will fix it..........like I have fiddled with it for YEARS...... Kmail will receive from gmail and office365 it has done that for...........the last year and a half......on this week off next week....but it will not SEND through either system........ There is no START / TLS button, I have said this before many times.... and there was always an excuse about well, it should work and they just have something wrong with their stuff... well, I have to get on with business, I am now doing an online class and I need an e-mail client that works and done. So, five minutes after I downloaded Thunderbird it was sending and receiving through both gmail and the Office356 / college account. So...............I want a simple answer. I am not even going to ask why. I just want to know... Will it SEND trough Office365 and gmail ... in the next.....say........three years? woodcannotbequestionedasafanboismoke

i'm not using k-mail but i don't think there are issues with this client mail... (may be something related to mail used? if at school there is a web mail server. .maybe that server need a specific configuration to interact with kmail clients.)
I'm not a developer.. but i see every day people using kmail and other clients... have you tried with a @google.com mail? same issue? |

Do you want to be banned or do you fear you might be banned for asking such a question? Asking such a question isn't likely to get you banned (though some ways of asking which go against the KDE Code of Conduct might get you a stern warning and/or a ban).
I'm having a little difficulty figuring out what you are asking about. Are you asking why Kmail doesn't seem to work with Office 365? Or are you asking why Office 365 can be set up to connect to the University's e-mail system but Kmail cannot? The primary e-mail client protocols in use are MS Exchange, IMAP and POP3. I'd expect that if the school isn't running MS Exchange then their e-mail system should support these protocols. MS Exchange can also be configured to support IMAP, and as I understand it Office 365 should have that support enabled (a quick google search for Office 365 IMAP shows instructions on various college web sites explaining how to use Office 365 with various IMAP clients). Kmail supports IMAP and POP3, so you should be able to connect Kmail to the school's e-mail system using the right settings. The only exception here would be if the school is hosting their own MS Exchange server and don't have IMAP support enabled, in which case your options for e-mail clients becomes very limited, with the primary options being MS Outlook, Thunderbird and Evolution. Above all else, the students could just use the web mail portal or an app on their phone. It may not be quite as convenient/integrated/nice as having a native desktop e-mail client, but it gets the job done well enough to get them through college. What problems have you run into trying to use Kmail with your school's e-mail?

How about you format your question in an understandable way, without polemics? Because, as others here have pointed out: your question is far from clear, so make proper paragraphs and write in an understandable way what exactly you want an answer for.
I strongly suggest you edit both your post and the title, as by the forum rules the question should be in the title and the posts should be considerate. Edit: thank you for changing your post, make more sense now ![]()
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

So it sounds like you've run into a couple of problems:
First, over the years Kmail's ability to connect with the college's e-mail have been iffy (previously kmail worked, recently kmail doesn't work, even before the college switched to Office 365) Second the college recently moved their e-mail to Office 365 and kmail doesn't work with Office 365 because Office 365 requires Start/TLS but kmail apparently doesn't (properly?) support Start/TLS, or at the very least is missing the option to use Start/TLS. A little investigation in the KDE 4 version of Kmail, I see in the configuration for Incoming IMAP accounts (Settings -> Configure Kmail -> Accounts -> Receiving) under Advanced there is an option for STARTTLS next to options for no encryption and SSL/TLS. (In the configuration for Outgoing SMTP accounts I only see options for no encryption, SSL and TLS). Of course this says nothing about the current state of the KDE 5 version of Kmail, so if you see no options for Start/TLS then I'd recommend filing a bug over at bugs.kde.org to get that fixed as that seems like a pretty important feature to me. A quick perusal of bugs involving "office365" yields a couple which seem to indicate that the KDE 4 version of Kmail works with Office365 without problems while the KDE 5 version may occasionally/frequently misbehave.

Please forgive me ....
BUT.....what was just posted is WHAT HAS BEEN POSTED AD INFINITUM for almost five YEARS.... It is "always something". Well.......there is an advertisement, which I AM POSITIVE......that NOT A SINGLE PERSON at this forum has seen...... It goes like this... "the leading cause of injury for old people (that is ME....woodsmoke) is....FALLING DOWN STAIRS... So the answer is "just don't fall"... It is an advert for "Stairclimber" which is a device that people like me....WOOD..>>OLD....SMOKE need..." But.........the point is.....that "if you can get hurt falling down stairs....then......... "just don't fall"....IS THE ANSWER. Well..........what was previously posted is WHAT HAS BEEN POSTED............over and over and over and over.... "misbehaves".............. I WROTE THE CODE FOR THE SOM that is all over the place on the net.......... CODE..................BY DEFINITION.............CANNOT "misbehave"...... what a load of "#$%^"....... So the answer is...........THUNDERBIRD MAGICALLY............it HAS TO BE MAGIC............can somehow........MAGICALLY.......... download and upload to Office365.................within MINUTES of entering EXACTLY THE SAME STUFF ......that ALL e-mail clients require.... and....THE SAME STUFF...........with the .....ahem......"I don't know....I will not talk about that..." STAR/TLS........ and.......Kmail.............WILL NOT UPLOAD..... So....rather like the Stair Climber..... I just won't fall( oh excuse me) WASTE YET AGAIN......HOURS , DAYS.........WEEKS.........MONTHS.... hoping that Kmail "won't misbehave".... what a load of....................... woodthanksyouforYETAGAINTHESAME................NON.........ANSWER..........SMOKE |

Well some of us don't come around more than a couple of times a week or less (even if we get an e-mail as soon as there is a response) so you'll have to forgive us for not giving instant feedback.
There are problems with suggesting that fixing an apparently broken e-mail client is like building a Stairclimber so that people "just don't fall". The Stairclimber still requires personnel who are paid to visit the home and install it, ensuring it works according to the expectation. The e-mail client is provided by unpaid volunteers and is expected to work with standard protocols, but there may be many (unknown) variations to how different services work or new extensions to the standards which the e-mail client needs to accommodate. Besides this Kmail/Kontact has been rather ill-maintained over the years with somewhere between 0 and 2 developers actively working on it in their spare time while bug reports have just been piling up. I wish there were more developers interested in fixing Kmail. I wish I had the capability to go in and fix things myself but I really don't (unless perhaps I were to give up browsing the forum and responding to people's posts, besides taking the time to orient myself with contributing to kmail as my skills are primarily in Java and Python not C++ or Qt). We want to help you. We want to have working software just like you do. We want it to integrate with various online services and "just work". Sometimes that requires writing bug reports so that people know there is a problem and so that the right people with the skills necessary can make the changes necessary so that it "just works". Those people aren't always aware that there are problems when trying to use app X with service Y which is why you need to file a bug report when you see problems (and the best person to write the report is the person experiencing the problem). I am not one of those people, but I try to be helpful by occasionally investigating if I can reproduce things and see if I can figure out workarounds until a fix is implemented. Unfortunately I don't use Office365 and my work machine where I do most of my investigations is still on KDE 4 (apparently we are bound to the same OS until further notice) so I can't help with any specifics around using the latest versions of Kmail with Office365 (and really I would rather someone else respond who does as they could provide better feedback, possibly even filing the bug with more of the technical details so that the developers can fix it). I feel bad when I see threads created which don't get responses (in a reasonable time frame) which I can't or don't have the ability to respond to. I also feel bad when I decide to go ahead and respond to one of these threads but only to raise more questions or to try and point out workarounds rather than offering real solutions which people hope for because I don't have the solutions, but maybe in asking some more questions we may be able to figure out appropriate solutions. Keep in mind that we are all volunteers, offering our spare time to work on these projects and respond to forum posts. We understand that you are frustrated with the whole situation because many of us are similarly frustrated with the whole situation. We want to help you. Please help us help you.

Airdrik thank you for the very kind response.... I has multiple "test e-mails" waiting "in que" in Kmail for the last YEAR and a half..... and..........curiously............after "my rant"........ SUDDENLY.........SUDDENLLY.......................... I had FORGOTTEN.........I had to actually place my finger on the screen and keep track on paper.... 72 "test e-mails" FROM Kmail ........ went through..... hmmmmm hey................YOU..............YOU....................posted a very kind and thoughtful response.... and for that I thank you......... but........as PRESIDENT REAGAN said........"trust but verify"..... I have move to Thunderbird...and a third party journaling app because WITH THE OLD WOODSMOKER................. finally............... "the rubber has met the road"..............it is now about making money when I am spread across Kubuntu and Kali.... and being an online lecturer for Anatomy and Physiology.... so..........for the volunteers that ..in the space of ......two days..........suddenly enabled Kmail to do Start/TLS ......you have my thanks. woodjusthasafewyearstoscubawithdisabledpeoplesmoke |
