Is there or is there going to be an official note taking app - ie Tomboy, OneNote, CherryTree?

Basket Note Pads seems the most likely candidate or possibly braindump. Wikipedia has Basket listed as a kde app but kde.org doesn't. Seems lie development over the last 10 years has been mostly to port it to the new versions of kde.

Being a heavy OneNote user myself (I got stuck at Office 2010 though ) I also started looking around for something similar and KJots seems somewhat decent. Unfortunately you can't really drag items around but it does seem to allow you to store quite a bit of data and although you are a bit limited the pro side is that by using its native workflow you're automatically generating a good overview of your posts.

Now, by itself KJots is a bit underwhelming in my opinion. It's decent, but... yah.

But I just discovered that KNotes (the yellow sticky toolbar app) uses the same storage environment as KJots. Better yet: it allows for much more information gathering, such as the ability to create a note directly from your clipboard contents. Default keyboard shortcut: alt-shift-c. That's decent enough...

Considering that both KJots and KNotes are part of the main base environment I'd say its pretty official.

Like I said it's a little less flexible than OneNote when it comes to moving snippets around, but the extra shortcuts do make it very useful I think.

My attempt with knotes was to open a text file with some notes I had. It split it up and opened in three different sticky note type things with no title bars, no menus etc. I had trouble just trying to drag them around as all three were slammed against the top edge of the screen. I'm used to cherrytree that has a full gui with all the separate notes as nodes on a left panel in tree fashion like folders in a file manager.

From my reading here, kjots development is strictly to maintain it but since then, I found this.

of KDE PIM back in KDE4 times. It was excluded from the PIM suite when we
switched to KF5 in KDE Applications 15.08 release.

so maybe it's making a comeback. Kjots is close to what I'm used to but the menu item "New Book" doesn't do anything for me - no response. Also I haven't worked out how to transfer my notes from cherrytree to kjots/Basket, aside from copy and paste but that doesn't work with images. Basket Note Pads does have an import feature and will import from knotes, kjots, tomboy and a few others. (no mention of OneNote)

One feature cherrytree has that I don't see in others is code with syntax highlighting. One of my notebooks is for webdev so I need to paste css/html/php sometimes. Naturally I could link to a file but it's nicer to embed it. I don't do enough coding to warrant using an IDE. CherryTree also has export to html or pdf. It's file formats for saving are xml or sqlite either with or without password protection.

I'm going to try kjots for some things and also knotes for small temp sticky notes but I'm going to have to stick with cherrytree for some things. Guess I'll mark this solved since kjots isn't abandoned as I thought.

For moving KNotes' notes around, you should be able to use alt+click-and-drag from anywhere in the note (works with any window, configurable in System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Window Behavior -> Window Actions -> Inner Window, Titlebar Frame).
