In recent weeks I switched from my 3 year stint with Linux Mint w/Cinnamon DE to KDE Neon and I am enjoying the experience. I had already decided on another email app but decided to try Kmail to see what it was like since it seems to be billed as the official email application for KDE. I was quite taken aback!
Nothing in Kmail seems to be finished! Everything must be configured by hand. Since it didn't have the bells and whistles configurability of Thunderbird I quickly removed it from my system. But now I find I still have several other programs which were installed at the same time, are indecipherable what they do, and I can find no way to uninstall them! The programs are Contact Theme Editor, Contact Print Theme Editor, Kmail Header Theme Editor, PIM Setting Explorer and Sieve Editor. I would ask what all this stuff is but, frankly, I find it overwhelming and indecipherable. There is little documentation for this stuff. Why was I given a Sieve Editor app when I don't have a Sieve server <shrug>. I don't know why I was given all this extra stuff when I installed Kmail and now I would like to know how to get rid of it. -=Ken=-

Kmail is dormant rather than not maintained ie. it is updated only. The future is doubtful as the underlying database is out of favour with many who once worked on it.
Any programs in the Kontact suite - eg Kmail Korganiser, Kaddressbook etc all reference Akonadi and therefore bring with them a raft of underlying programs. You will need to delete any/all of these and any akonadi to purge them from your system - which is fun!! having done it myself. For the future Kube is expected to be the new KDE email program but it is still in development and those who have tried it advise it is some way from being ready for general use. Similarly Falkon (the renamed Qupzilla) is to replace Konqueror as the default browser. So yes, Thunderbird is generally the email of choice |

OK, thanks for cluing me in.
I think I will avoid that bundle of software. It seems rather rude to install a bunch of "helper" apps that you have no ability to uninstall. I suppose I could hunt them all down, go in as Super and delete them but for now I am content to hide them in the menu. I wonder why the Linux "press" keeps saying Kmail is the default email app for KDE? -=Ken=-

Which is a shame, because I really liked Kmails concept.

Couldn't agree more. Since the KDE devs are so hard at work ironing out the bugs in many programs, why not do the same in Kontact? It is a great program with lots of possibilities, it's just that it doesn't work right. |
