Since upgrading from kde4 to kde5 I am having problems with kmail which frequently fails because akonadi won't start.

I can't start akonadi manually either:

Code: Select all
curlew:/home/mike% akonadictl start
QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-mike'
QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-mike'
QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-mike'
Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString)
curlew:/home/mike% QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-mike'
org.kde.pim.akonadiserver: Failed to detect mysqld version!
org.kde.pim.akonadiserver: Failed to connect to database!
org.kde.pim.akonadiserver: Database error: "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/akonadi-mike.MMZSMe/mysql.socket' (2) QMYSQL: Unable to connect"
org.kde.pim.akonadiserver: Failed to remove runtime connection config file
org.kde.pim.akonadicontrol: Application 'akonadiserver' exited normally
..

How should I resolve this problem which I suspect may be due to some incompatibility with some of my old kde4 config files - I've created a new user with no past history of having used kde4 and that user can access the same IMAP mailboxes as the ones I use and kmail & akonadi appear to work fine for that user but not when logged in with my original user name.
