Google blocking KMail?

Wed Jul 17, 2019 11:47 am
With their new API policy, are Google blocking KMail?

Today it gives me no access to my GMail account(s).
Have I got a setting that could be causing trouble or is it Google?
If it's Google, is access going to be restored at some point?

Unsure if same issue but after hearing Office 365 was working I tried switching again to KMail today and cannot get Gmail to work. Followed the advice of creating an app password etc but nothing works. Looks like I remain stuck using Thunderbird.

Same here on Fedora 30. It seems to be that google has changed something on their api and oauth. So as far as i found out, the akonadi services for google are not longer beeing accepted as an secure application. So the KDE Developer that is responsible for this Application needs to authenticate the application again at google. then after this process Kmail and google should work again fine. i am disappointed, because it is a fresh installation and i dont want to use thunderbird :-(

I'd suggest filing this in bugs.kde.org to ensure it gets properly resolved.

File a bug? Ok, tho' surely no-one can have missed it?
<Later - Done https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=410027 >

Thinking about it, this happened a few months ago when Google first started pushing this new API action, and then got resolved in a short while. Hopefully that'll happen, tho' it's looking more Draconian this time.

Same problem for me as well. Couldn't succeed getting Kmail working with GMail. Tried the different suggestions but nothing works.

The good thing is that the Calendar and Contacts through KOrganizer is working for me. I can see the events and contacts of my google account. So, only KMail is not working. Here are the steps I am trying

# At Kmail clicked on Settings and clicked on Account.
# Entered the Google Email address and clicked next.
# Passed the OAuth2 page

Problem : Even after successfully verifying the account Google doesn't recognize the app hence it shows error. Account is not synced. Mail can't be retrieved.

For my account 2-step verification is turned on. Tried with G-Suite account as well. Same issue. Would love KMail to work again so that I don't have to use other mail clients.

I am on Kubuntu 19.04.

Having same issues here. Also getting the "app is not registered" message from google. I did notice that after deleting the google account from online accounts and reinstalled, everything seems to work. Gmail will go offline once in a while, but clicking the restart button seems to fix most times.

Is there a ray of hope? It looks like to me that there is indeed.

Can you please mention the steps that you are taking to get the mails? Can you send mails from KMail as well? I am just looking for an alternative way to get KMail working till this is fixed.

If you don't have 2fa enabled on your account, and you do not have "less secure app access" turned on, you can get this.

You might try changing the authentication method for the account from "Gmail" to "Plain" as described here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/a ... l_kontact/

I just installed Kontact, and I don't have any issues with gmail on Kmail, but I do have Two Factor Authentication enabled.

Unfortunately I am getting this error every time I am trying to access any Gmail (either two way or normal) account at Kontact / KMail. Post OAuth, it shows the unsafe error message and after that nothing can be done. Tried with different encryption methods too.

The interesting thing is that I can access the Calendars of the same Gmail accounts from Kontact. I had to add those accounts separately because KMail is not working.

It no longer works for me. I had to reset my mail, last night, due to a corrupted conf file related to the wallet. Now i cant bypass it like i had before. once i though i had got passed it, the warning would come up and that would be it. Had to go back to Evolution. :(

OK, this may seem weird. I tried from scratch again. Went through the process and of course, I got the error message. But on a hunch, from a previous API change they made, I changed the Authentication from Gmail to PLAIN. Don't do a test. Just change it and save, then go back to the Receiving tab and select Gmail and hit the restart button.

Currently it is working and syncing.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences. Well I tried again but changing the Authentication from Gmail to Clear Text (No Plain option was there when I tried) didn't work either. It shows a message as :

"The server for account "Google Mail <Account name> refused the supplied username and password. Do you want to go to the settings, have another attempt at logging in, or do nothing?

Login failed, server replied: A000002 NO Invalid credentials ( Failure ) [ AUTHENTICATIONFAILED ]
"

If I recall correctly, I had seen this issue when I tried KDE sometime back earlier.

As of today, the work around stopped working. Forced to go back to Evolution. Tried the flatpak nightly, but can't get it to work at all, or even see my pgp keys.
