KMail doesn't start any more

Mon May 04, 2020 6:35 pm
Hello to the forum,

after accidently deleting the folder "~/.local/share/local-mail", "KMail" now exits with a fatal error, saying "couldn't create collection trash, ressourceid: 20" and "Kontact" quits completely - even after restoring the deleted folder from the trash.
I then tried to remove the whole Kontact suite by using "Synaptic", selecting the "remove completely" option for every package. I did the same for all libraries containing "KDE PIM" or "Kontact" in its name or comment.
Then I deinstalled the "Akonadi" package using the same method, hoping that all packages related to the "Kontact" suite and "Akonadi" were deleted so that I can do a clean install.
But after reinstalling the "Kontact" suite and "Akonadi", the error still occurs.

Can somebody tell me what's going wrong? Which packeges/config files/folders do I have to delete to be able to do a clean install?

By the way:
After deleting the "Kontact" suite and "Akonadi" a second time as described above, there are still KOrganizer alarm notifications :-\

~/.local/share/local-mail is where all your email is stored. Deleting it is actually much worse than deleting, say, ~/.local/share/akonadi. If you can get the first directory to the state before deletion through un-trashing it, I'd suggest a following course of action:

  • quit the Kontact and KMail software.
  • in the terminal, type
    Code: Select all
    akonadictl stop
  • back up and then delete the ~/.local/share/akonadi dir.
  • restore the ~/.local/share/local-mail dir from the Trash.
  • start the Kontact suite, this starts Akonadi as well. Your email should hopefully be visible in the left pane, but you'll need to reconfigure your account settings (folders etc.).
Reinstalling Kontact and Akonadi doesn't touch ~/.local/share/akonadi dir, where Akonadi stores all its data.

I hope this helps - good luck!
