Bonjour,
For years I used Thunderbird ... But, as I am tired with the different bugs I encounter and never corrected ..., I want to try to use Kmail in the same way I use Thunderbird: - I want to simply create several POP accounts with their own set of folders (Received, Sent, Draft, ...) - I want to create several POP account using the Local folders - I want to create a POP account using the set of folders of another account (option !) I don't understand what is an identity: what is the relation between an identity and an account ? (There are no identities in Thunderbird ...) An identity is defined by an email address as is an account for the identity !!??!! I don't understand how to create the different folders I need and how to select them. I don’t understand where the emails are saved. Is there somewhere a user handbook explaining all that in details for a poor retired man ? !! Pierre |

God dag,
I feel your pain Papipio! As someone who is looking for a replacement for Claws Mail I have just gone through the frustration/confusion/agony of trying to guess how to set up and configure KMail. (Almost there now) When I found this KDE UserBase Wiki page:- https://userbase.kde.org/Kmail/Configuring_Kmail my initial joy evaporated when I found it is a work in progress But hey, this is Open Source and we both have more time than we used to have, so why don't we try, learn and make it a priority to help fill out the missing pages and help future users make the move to KMail? Feel free to PM me if you want some support. The blind leading the blind! Harry [Edit] I just found this link https://docs.kde.org/stable5/en/pim/kma ... start.html it should be much more help |

Just imagine POP-account as a box where the mails waiting to download. When you create an POP-account, you just define where to store the downloaded mails - the Inbox. An Inbox Folder (Maildir agent) may serve as container for more then one POP-account, if you want ... The folders Sent, Drafts, Templates are specific for an identity. This is the body, who has an email address. In the simplest case, you create for each POP-account a corresponding identity and account for sending. Then you bind the sending/outgoing account with the identity. The binding between POP account and identity is loose. You can choose an identity when composing a new mail. You can also define default identity for a folder. When the folder is selected and you start composing new message, the default identity is used/selected.
There are two ways ... You can create or use one Maildir - agent (default Maildir agent is "Local Folder") and in its Inbox Folder create a subfolder for each POP-account. These subfolders are to choose as destination folder when you configure POP - account. The same must be done for each identity (email address) in folders Sent, Draft, Templates.
The other way I would prefer is to define several Maildir - agents, one for each POP account. Each Local Folder agent manages its data (mails + meta data) in a folder on you hard disk (somewhere in ~/.local/share/.., ~/.local/share/local-mail for default Local Folder). So it is easier to manage (backup, copying, moving, ...) the data. Each Maildir agent has its own folders for sent mails, for drafts and templates. These folders are to use in the identities.
The downloaded mails goes into the folder defined in the POP account. The sent mails goes into the sent folder defined in the identity - except you select the option "Keep replies in this folder" in folder properties. Then the mail stays in the same folder as the mail you answers. On hars disk the files with mails are managed whitin the directory defined for Maildir agent |

Bonjour,
I thank you both for your answers. My problem is to manage folders for my different accounts. (I still say account because I still do not understand clearly the relation between identity and account: am I too old ?!! With my long experience of Outlook Express, Thunderbird, ... I had only accounts to manage). In https://userbase.kde.org/Kmail/Configuring_Kmail https://docs.kde.org/stable5/en/pim/kma ... start.html nothing is said in details about how to define folders for each identity / account. Finally I succeeded in creating accounts and folders (see screenshot) but: • Impossible to define a folder as the inbox for each account. All the email received are located in the local folder inbox, I don’t want that, I didn’t find any means to receive emails in the inbox folder of the account (named Boite de réception). • I didn’t find any means to define the trash folder for each account (named Corbeille). • The email are received till September: where are the email received in October ?!!!!! • None of the drop down menus available from the tool bar buttons is displayed. • One positive thing: sent emails are actually located in the sent folder of the account (Envoyés). The configuration I want to get is what I have today with Thunderbird and presented by raphaelra: • Personal POP (4) accounts using the same set of folders, • Accounts for associations in which I am involved using each their own set folders. I am very satisfied of using Mageia Linux with KDE Plasma, I am no longer using Windows. So I thought Kmail is a good email software, but finally now, like Harry, I think Kmail is a work in progress with very much progress to accomplish ! I could participate to write documentation about Kmail if I am able to understand how to use it and how to actually configure it. I spent much time trying to understand how to configure Kmail, I am disappointed because this time the result is negative !! https://www.dropbox.com/s/p4d74kvd3j0yu ... 3.png?dl=0 Pierre |

Hi Pierre,
don't give up
When you order a POP-account, the provider gives you:
This means in language of KMail:
For each identity you define in which folder to put sent mails and manage drafts and templeates and which sending/outgoing account (which SMTP server) to use for sending mails.
See here for identities and here for (POP) accounts.
See above ... You can define separate for each POP account a destination folder where to put dowloaded mails. And - as recomended in my last mail - add a Maildir agent as reciving account for your Pierre_Free, Noella_Free, FR_NTIC, ...
In case of POP accounts, only one Trash folder can be used for all accounts. Only IMAP Accounts can have separate Trash folders. |

I thank you raphaelra for your perseverance ! I don't give up ...
But, for being sure: which version of Kmail are you considering ? For the moment I use 5.11.0 version available from Mageia software store. Pierre |

Bonjour,
Still the same situation: after having spent several hours exploring Kmail menus to try to understand all the possibilities, trying to update Kmail to 5.15 version, I am frustrated, I am unable to create a POP account with its own main four folders: • Inbox • Sent • Drafts • Templates So I give up until I get a detailed procedure for creating a POP account with all the steps from the menus. I wonder whether the version of Kmail I use (5.11.0) is good, but I can’t update it. I think it is the first time, for years and for numerous softwares, I give up in trying to use a software !!! I thank you for your help. Pierre |

Thanks to Raphael, finally I reached the goal: 4 accounts installed with their own set of folders, 2 accounts using the local folders.
Compared to Thunderbird, there are (too) many possibilities for installing accounts, I just wonder who needs all that ... And there are still many bugs in Kmail (I’ll list some of them), but now I have to use it to appreciate it. I prefer to use POP accounts: I save emails in my PC, and the cleaning of the inbox of my accounts is done automatically (I keep emails in the inbox for 6 months, the are deleted by Thunderbird). Bonjour,
Some comments and questions about Kmail (with no specific order, some of them may be from my misunderstanding !! And I hope my English is understandable enough): • When creating accounts, the display is not refresh after modifying the name of the account, the new name appears later (after Kmail or Mageia restart ?) ... • Nothing displayed when getting new emails. • Nothing displayed when sending an email. • Nothing displayed when moving an email from a folder to another folder. • Sometimes impossible to move emails from one folder to another folder, without any warning displayed. • For the default account, when creating a new message to send, in the from cell appears the address of another account !!! I always have to change it. • In Configuration / Réception (Receiving), the accounts are displayed in disorder. • When creating a new message to send, the identity should be the identity of the account for which a folder is selected in the folders frame on the left, not systematically the default identity (It must often be modified). • I didn’t find the solution for signing a message with the logo picture of my association. • Even the loading of the distant contend is allowed in the contact card of the sender, the distant contend is never automatically displayed for next emails of the sender. • For POP accounts using their own set of folders, the inbox folder is the last, it should be the first on the top as usually (and as in local folders). • In Dolphin, I would like to have a line “Send by email with Kmail” in the Actions context menu for a file, as for Thunderbird. You should modifiy your identity and go to "singature". Here you will see a button to include a picture in your signature. However, you must think about our planet resources and make this picture a small as 60 ko for example, and never use it in a list. |

Bonjour Denis,
Merci pour ta réponse. I used KMail for sometimes, but I have been using Thunderbird for years ... Even Thunderbird has annoying bugs, everything is possible, simpler, and easier, so I prefer to continue to use Thunderbird. Pierre |

the problem is how to do for POP3 folders just like IMAP. Each account separately as usual
https://ctrlv.sk/FJe7 the problem is that rules need to be created to sort messages from different accounts. Each account - identity should have its own folder and download messages there as in Thunderbird |
