<SOLVED> Kmail address book is greyed out - Why?

I have just given up on Thunderbird due to backup problems and started using Kmail. I have searched the Kmail user manual and this forum. How do I get an address book?

not a silly question! I am new to KDE and I did not have kaddressbook installed: all is good now.
