What steps are needed to clean-up a kmail installation and start from scratch again ?

It appears kmail is very finicky, there is no good manual about its working, no documentation on the files it maintains for itself and akonadi, no documentation about its import/export. One can see various files thrown around in /home/user/.local/share, home/user/.config/akonadi, /home/user/.config/, /home/user/.kde4. Which settings go to which files ? Which files to remove to start from scratch ?

Any help from those who know or pointers to knowledgebase or wiki will be much appreciated. Thanks all.
