I touched on this in another thread here, but decided this was getting off that similar topic and expands into too many questions.

I am running Linux (Mepis 7 & 8 ) using KDE 3.5.8 & 3.5.10, KMail 1.9.7 & 1.9.9, and Kontact ?? & 1.2.9 respectively. I currently have my e-mail (spicebird/thunderbird) on a flash drive that I can move from office to home to road. I would like to migrate to Kontact/Kmail and do the same thing. I tried a few months ago and had trouble with writing to the flash drive which seems to have been solved by changing from fat16 to ext3 format. So I may be on the verge of being able to do this.

If I read the above mentioned thread correctly, the folder that I would need to move to and then symlink from the flash drive is /home/Rob/.kde/share/apps/kmail. But when I import my messages my mail seems to be stored in /home/Rob/Mail which is 405.5 MB with 45,425 files not /home/Rob/.kde/share/apps/kmail which is 16.1kb with 1 file and 3 sub-folders all of which are empty. If I move /home/Rob/.kde/share/apps/kmail, /home/Rob/Mail, and /home/Rob/.kde/share/config/kmailrc & kmail.eventsrc & kmailcvtrc to the flash drive and symlinking them back to the appropriate places on each computer, everything seems to work, that is without really getting any mail. I don't know if I needed kmail.eventsrc & kmailcvtrc. In the other thread toad had suggested kmailrc.

Now the questions:
1) What is the relationship between /home/Rob/.kde/share/apps/kmail & /home/Rob/Mail? Which is really suppose to have the mail?
2) Can this be done with the other items in Kontact--at least contacts & calendar because if I make changes in one on one computer I need it to show up when I go to another computer?
3) Am I missing something that will cause the whole thing to collapse on me?
4) Is there a better/eaiser way to accomplish my goal? Keep in mind that the computer on the road is not connected to the network.
5) Is there a place to find this information that I have missed?

Thanks for your input and any thoughts.
Rob

Search this forum for kontact and you will find a script which backs up your pim information. That should see you through.
