Hi every body, it's my first post on this forum !
I think about an idea of a new PIM applications for KDE : A VoIP phone for the PIM applications project. There are actually Kphone and Twinkle but they aren't ported to KDE 4 and, above all, they aren't integrated with others PIM applications, like KaddressBook and Kontact. This VoIP phone will should be compatible with the SIP protocol (imperative for a VoIP phone for me) and, why not, an input in Kontact, as others PIM applications. And also, in Kaddressbook, a field for the SIP address of a contact. It's may be not very clear, but, I'm sorry, I don't widely speak English . And according to you, this is a good idea ? billux. |

i really hope this will be done with kopete (if someone decides to continue to work on decibel and kopete) unfortunately VoIP and this stuff seems to be very unimportant for free software developers

Twinkle will be ported. I've asked the developer(s).

Welcome to KDE forums! And about your idea: I would like to have an VoIP, but I would prefer it as an "KPart" so it could be part of Kopete and any other app that would need it. But your idea can still be implemented alongside my.

The most optimal platform and application agnostic way to do this would be by using Decibel, the KDE 4 API for the Telepathy specification. I am not sure of its current development status, as the Telepathy is apparently constantly changing its API.

Yes, but when ? KDE 4.0 is released one year ago ! But then I think Kopete would be better integrated with others PIM applications. And the development of a Kpart is maybe more simple than a whole application... I read some articles about the Decibel project, and, unfortunately, it's seem to be very late . So, if someone want to develop a VoIP Kpart or plugin for Kopete, nonetheless Decibel, he's welcolme |

But it's not the only application missing. Kdiff3 was released these days KOffice, Kile, KDevelop, Konversation ... all still beta software KMyMoney ... no KDE4 port available So for some applications we just have to wait, or use the old KDE3 version ...

I don't think that it is unimportant, but rather very complex. There are lots of codecs, some (most?) patented or otherwise "protected", it combines two non-trivial problem domains (networking and audio/video processing), etc. Given those circumstances there are quite a lot of applications already It is unfortunate that the Telepathy specification changes so frequently, it really looks like a great approach to separate problem domains and facilitate more widespread re-use. But there is still hope that it will turn out well, see George Goldberg's latest blog entries: http://grundleborg.wordpress.com/2009/0 ... lar-posts/ http://grundleborg.wordpress.com/2009/0 ... ode-ideas/ Cheers, _

And twinkle currently supports kaddressbook. True, it is currently your KDE3 version, which is why I had to turn it off, but it does support it for local callerID and will even display the photo from the address book. To quote the Twinkle website (http://www.xs4all.nl/~mfnboer/twinkle/index.html):
If you want more than that, please explain and let the developer's know. |
