I always leave my computer on. After upgrading KDE from 4.13 to 4.2 I experienced several problems. Akregator wouldn't fetch feeds. Sound wouldn't come out of Amarok. And there were a couple of minor glitches. The Network Manager and the cable modem seemed to be fighting, with first one and tehn the other freezing up.
I fixed the Amarok problem by stepping it back one version. I switched to ifup networking so I wouldn't have to worry about Network Manager. That left Akregator, which I use pretty much 24 hours a day. I found only a few instances of Akregator problems, and nothing like complete failure to fetch feeds. I gritted my teeth and vowed I would fix it without asking for help. The power went out last night. Rebooting fixed every problem I was still having. I am glad I didn't have to spend any time on it today. I've been using Linux so long now rebooting never occurred to me. I usually only do that after a kernel upgrade. In a different vein, I was very much upset by some of the changes to KDE from 3.5 to 4. At this point I think everything that was done worked out for the better, except for one thing. Konqueror is a better file management program than dolphin. I know it's still in KDE, and maybe it's not too late for me to ask that you please not remove it from the desktop environment. The integration and functionality of Konqueror has always been exactly right for the things I need to do. I tried Dolphin before KDE even got to 3.5, and it seemed like a tinker toy compared to Konqueror. It still strikes me as overly lightweight. I don't think the web browser ever stood a chance in a field that includes Firefox, but everything else about Konqueror has been excellent. Thank you for your time. |
