How to create local folders outside the local folder?

I have searched for this and can not find it anywhere.

At the moment, I am using Thunderbird. Parts of that mailprogram is good, other parts - especially the addressbook - is not good at all. I really like the KDE addressbook and many of the features of the mail application.

BUT - I have a lot of mailaccounts that needs to be checked. And I love the way it is organised in Thunderbird. You can either send all to the same inbox (under Local folders), or you can choose to have a complete folder structure for each mailaccount.

I would like to organise my mail the same way in Kmal. One folder for each account with a complete set of subfolders. If possible, I would like to delete the whole Local folder and subfolders as I never use it. I want to keep all mail from one account - inbox, sent, junk/spam, subfolders, templates etc. together to avoid messing things up. In Thunderbird, this is very neat.

Hope that someone know how to do this and can point me in the right direction.

It is currently not possible to get another "root" node or top level folder since it represents the top of the KMail mail directory.

However it is possible to select any folder as the default destination for any "Receiving" account.

You can also specify seperate Draft / Sent / Template folders for different Identities, which can be forced to use a certain outgoing server. Not sure about Spam though.

Thank you for the reply. I was trying to find some in depth tutorials and documentation on the internet, but so far I have not found anything that was beyond the basics. Maybe I will go ahead and make some after I have been using it for a while.

Has there been any discussion on making several root folders possible? However, if it would only be possible to remove the different folders in the root level and have complete set of folders for each account, you do not need another root level.

BTW - when you add an IMAP account, it gets it's own root level...

As a long term user of Thunderbird and love the capability of being able to have separate "local folders" for each email account.

I also have been searching high and low for information on this feature.

It's a shame that this isn't possible in Kmail.

Given that Kontact / Kmail is an outstanding package in every other aspect, I'll be making it my client of choice.

Are there any plans to implement this at any stage in the future?

Merlyn,

You can check what I have written so far about going from Thunderbird to Kmail here:

I have just moved a few of my accounts over so far, but have decided to move the rest as well. So I have a bit of a job ahead :-)

As bcooksley already wrote, it is possible to have separate folders for accounts/identities. The only limitation at the moment is that they are all below the "Local Folders" root.

My personal setup is to have separate inbox folders for all POP3 accounts but use central sent/drafts/outbox since I am only interested in dividing up incoming mail.

Future, Akonadi based, setups will allow several root folders, basically one per "mail resource" (which could be an IMAP server, a maildir directory tree, etc)

Cheers,
