Akregator overloaded... Not meant for heavy use?

I follow a good number of RSS feeds, and have until now used FeedDemon in WindowsXP and RSSOwl on Linux. But wanted to try out Akregator the other day. So I did an export of the feeds from RSSOwl to an OPML file and tried to import it into Akregator.

The first few times I tried it, I started Akregator through the PIM interface. The import took A LOT of time (how hard can it be to import a text file and add the feeds? It should of course not check the files while importing - it would take an extreme amount of time on a slow line, and it is not smart to access the network without the knowledge/approval of the user?). And as Akregator asked what to call the folder all was imported under, it crashed. Nothing stored, so it was just to start all over again.

But as it was never possible to get it done through the PIM interface, I thought I might give it a go by starting it as a standalone program.

I was actually able to import the OPML file ( very slowly as in the other case ), and I could reorganize folders. But the operation of Akregator slowed to a crawl. And after a few minutes, it crashed. Now, I am sometimes able to get it to start, but then it crashes when it starts updating feeds. And sometimes it does not even start fully. The dancing icon shows, and then it shuts down/crashes before any windows are shown.

Is there a way to delete the feeds from Akregator without opening the program? Akregator on my machine is kinda "bricked" right now. As it does not seem to be useful for large numbers of feeds, I guess it is better to clean it out and use something else...

Try removing the following files / folders:
Code: Select all
$(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/akregatorrc
$(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/apps/akregator

Sorry if I am a little slow here..

What you pasted is the code I need to run? Or the path to the files I need to remove?

Will this also remove the Akregator application? Or just the feeds? I only need to remove the feeds. And I will try to load a smaller list. Do you know any of the devs for Akregator? Maybe they have some kind of max number of feeds and articles that they recommend so I do not end up in problems again?

Those are the files / folders you need to remove. The complete commands to execute in Konsole would be:
Code: Select all
rm $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/akregatorrc
rm -r $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/apps/akregator

This will reset the Akregator configuration to default ( ie: wipe your feeds ), and should "unbrick" it.

I have seen those dollar signs before, and they have not done me any good. Is it ok to use them in Kubuntu? I think my default shell is bash, but not shure.

EDIT: Just checked and I do not have any folders in /root called /share

Seems like I found an easier way to do it:

Open Dolphin, Click on View in teh menu and choose "Show hidden files".

Click on your Home area. You should now be able to find a folder called .kde and under that folder browse to

/share/apps/akregator/data

In there was a file called feeds.opml and a backup copy of it. I renamed both (just put old. in fornt of the name) and Akregator started just fine with the default feeds loaded.

Thank you for setting me on the right track.

Do you know what the limit of Akregator is?

Sorry, I do not know what Akregators limit is. You could try limiting the archive amounts to help reduce the load on it though.

This has now been replicated by a dev and registered as a bug. There is a limit to how many feeds you can have open, but in this case it supposedly has something to do with favicons...
