I've had much frustration today trying to do this. I've searched all over the settings and find no reference to threading at all.

(I can't get KDE to work so I'm running under Xfce for now, but I don't think that is the problem)

There are five icons above the message list.
The second to the right controls the aggregation behavior.
You'll probably want the "flat" mode.

Well I'll be darned. "Flat Date View" was it! Thank you so much! I feel silly now for not finding that myself.
