I can find an option to get rid of tooltips on the message list, but a way of getting rid of them on the folder list seems either hidden or non-existent.

Is there a way? The information in the tooltip is the sort of thing that's occasionally useful, but most of the time I couldn't care less about it and it just gets in the way.

Right click on the grey bar above the folder list. There is an option for "Display Tooltips" - does that help?
