Kontact and Google

Fri Jun 12, 2009 10:36 pm
I have an android phone so all my contacts, calenders and email are synced between my google account and my phone, it would be great if I could setup Kontact to sync with my google account aswell. So far I have got my email up and running in KMail but haven't worked out how to setup my calender (with read/write support) and my contacts (again read/write) is this possible? If not is it something that is planned?
I'm using KDE 4.3 beta 2
Also just thought, is there anyway to sync between kopete and KAddressbook? This isn't as important to me as my google contacts but would be nice

I heard there is a method using GCalDaemon (or similar name), i.e. synchronizing the local contact and calendar data files with Google.

You might also be interested in this thread: google-akonadi-res ... 58723.html

To clarify, follow this guide
http://gcaldaemon.sourceforge.net/usage11.html

to install GCalcDaemon, then run /user/local/sbin/GCALDaemon/bin/config-editor.sh to set things up. Make sure both the Http sync AND the file based sync are enabled, with your gmail account, for everything to work right (learned this one the hard way). After that run /user/local/sbin/GCALDaemon/bin/standalone-start.sh, then restart KOrganizer and follow this guide, more or less-
http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/122054

The localhost bit is really important.

This will enable read/write access of _events_, and best I can tell deletion has been fixed too in the newest version of KOrganizer. You will need to reload your browser in google calender and/or right click on the remote calender name->Reload in Korganizer to see any changes made from one in the other.

All of that said, and what I'm about to post a thread on, I have yet to figure out how to get KOrganizer's todos to sync in any way with Google Calender's Tasks.

I am too trying to sync KOrganiser and Google Calendar.

I have installed GCALDaemon and followed the configuration instructions. I did not find a way to add calendars in KOrganiser (KDE 4.3) but I did manage to add a calendar resource via Resources under Advanced in System Settings. I added it for a remote file, did the localhost thing, then set that as the standard resource.

Now when I open KOrganiser I get a popup authentication dialog asking for a password and username for dion at localhost (dion is my username). I have tried to login using my Google Apps email and password, my computer user/pass, etc. (I use Google Calendar as part of Google Apps, not as part of a Google Account) For all occasions the status bar on the bottom right "succesfully" downloads Calendar - but nothing actually happens - I don't see any of my GCal stuff added at all!

I would really appreciate any tips on how to go about fixing this.

P.S. Recently I deleted my Google Account and told it to switch to my Google Apps account email. This has caused some null resource errors appearing on Google on applications shared between Google Accounts and Google Apps. One such example is Google Calendar. Could this be a possible cause of it?

The null resource errors are likely related. How are you entering your username? Possibly try with the full domain present, especially given you are not using a standard Google Account.

It turns out that Google takes a while for it to realise you've undid your changes. It's now the next morning and it seems as though everything is working again - my Google Account and Google Apps account are now separate entities without any conflicting resources.

Everything seems to be working fine now ... on the Google side of things.

Still no difference in KOrganiser though.

Yes, I am typing the full URL in the password prompt. I took a look at the google.ics file GCALDaemon was creating and it seems as though it is not an iCal but in fact a vCal. Could this be the reason?

Another thing that could be causing it is that I used the public URL provided my Google as I did not see a Private option. Strangely this morning the a private option appeared again - I will try it out later today and report if that fixes it.

The difference between iCal and vCal is very likely the reason why Kontact is failing to display your calendar. I think Kontact supports vCal.

Turns out it had nothing to do with the VCal - using the private URL fixed it. Odd indeed.

If I ever become a KDE developer I want to join the kdepim suite, it sure looks like it could use some help.

Yes, we do.
Most of our developers are currently bound by work on Akonadi porting, i.e. move KDE PIM applications from their own storage handling to Akonadi.

Akonadi makes things like access to new data sources a lot easier than our current infrastructure. As a matter of fact, the new Google data support being developed in KDE extragear s being dones by a developer who had not done any KDE PIM work before, i.e. it didn't require to wade through tons of old KDE PIM code to get started.

If you ever get the urge to start developing as well, our mailinglist is kde-pim@kde.org, our main IRC channel is #kontact (on freenode network) and we have a dedicated Akonadi channel #akonadi (same network)

Cheers,
