I'm a bit fed up with the patheticness of cloud storage for PIM data and I am thinking of just using the offline kontact resources (then store it myself remotely where I know I have control over it) instead of playing around with synchronisation.
However I read about some news on kontact migrating to akonadi and some other shifts of resource storage and I was wondering if when this does occur if I shall have to re-setup my data or if there is an easy way to import it all without losing my data. Yes, no? News? I am currently using KDE 4.2.96 (latest KDE snapshot 4.3 RC2) on Gentoo.

Will be imported automatically as long as we have support for the respective storage backend, e.g. local file, remote file, etc.
Not all of the backends supported by Kontact have been ported yet, but we are working on it. So you should be safe right now if you just use the things provided by Kontact. Cheers, _
