In Ubuntu Hardy I ran Korganier 3.5.9 (I use icewm, not KDE or Gnome). It worked fine. On one of my three machines I upgraded to 4.2.2 .... the calendar file created by 4.2.2 cannot be read by 3.5.9. What's up? How do I revert the file. (All three of my machines share this file.)

It is unlikely that the KDE 4.2.2 format is able to be down graded back to KDE 3.5.9 unfortunately. Unless you have a backup of this file, you will need to install KOrganizer from KDE 4 on all machines.

No offense to KDE - I use a lot of their programs - but it is just nuts that you cannot save in an older format. I'm pretty peeved at Korganizer right now. It should have at least told me what was going to happen. OpenOffice, for example, is pretty good about this.

It is possible that the file has simply been shifted since I believe both versions of KOrganizer use the ICS format to store calendars. It is even more likely that just the configuration file was upgraded.

bcooksley: What you have written is encouraging. I, too, was puzzled why if the file was in ICS format it should not be able to be read. What actions do I take in the configuration file to be sure it can be read by 3.5.9?

You will need to set the variable $KDEHOME on your KDE 4 machine, pointing it to ~/.kde4 for example. You then need to remove the previous KOrganizer configuration file from ~/.kde and recreate it with the KDE 3 version. Finally, you will need to manually add the KDE 3 ICS file to the KDE 4 KOrganizer.
