[Solved] Why would I want to use Akonadi?

That's precisely it. KDE4 is now like KDE3 was in the old days. So in a sense, from a user perspective, a regression.

Yes, quite unfortunate. The initial plan, as far as I know, was to use MySQL/Embedded, but there were issues which prevented that solution.
Using MySQL directly (or alernatively Postgres in the next release) got at least the functional requirements going. Its a pity that starting it seems to be such a fragile thing (almost all startup problems of Akonadi server are related with the MySQL startup).

I am pretty sure that this is not the final take on this, i.e. as soon as something more "compact" is available it will become the default.

Hmm... Not sure... I will get back to you on that since I am not using Gnome at the moment.
