I'm new to Kontact. I like what I see, although I've only really used the calendar much, to this point. However, I have two major distresses:

1. The documentation is essentially 5 years old. This is simply not credible. It also is minimal in the extreme. Both factors make it essentially useless.
2. It isn't installed except by specific request. Search for it in the Synaptic Package Manager and it simply isn't there. I found mention of it only in this forum. Not that having really helps...

Proposal: Why not start a user-managed documentation wiki, so that users could develop what the developers cannot seem to find time for?

I really don't understand the concept of software without current, adequate documentation. I'm not the programmer of this stuff. How am I to make sense it if without comment from those who are? So, we all fumble through various problems, and some things are learned. We need a place to share them, I think.

Kontact as you see it is unlikely to get official documentation, as the developers have been busy for a very long time doing a complete re-write that will use clean code, modern developments and many long-term benefits. Meanwhile, our solution is exactly what you propose. We have http://userbase.kde.org - a wiki where all are encouraged to share their hints and tips. You'll find help on the Applications/Office page. KMail is the most documented, purely because that's the part that attracts the most questions. If you need specific questions answering and can't find the info there, either post the question here or drop in to IRC, #kde-www channel. You can also use the Discussion pages that exist for every content page on the wiki.

I'm eager to see the new version, as well. Hope it comes out before the rising oceans drown most of us (heh heh).
