Sync Gmail with Kmail

Tue Jan 26, 2010 6:02 am
Hello KDE forums! I've recently started to switch to only KDE apps, and one thing I was trying to do was to use Kmail over Thunderbird. Is there any way to sync your Gmail contacts with Kmail? I'd prefer automatically, but I guess I could import them if that's a possibility.

KDE PIM applications will be using Akonadi for contacts in KDE 4.4, which will allow use of the Google Contacts and Calendars natively, assuming the Google Data resource has been installed from KDE Extragear, and configured.

See http://bisscuitt.blogspot.com/2009/06/h ... onadi.html for build instructions for *buntu based distributions.

Well, I must say I've had some serious problems with running Akonadi on KDE 4.3.X. Is it really ready in the coming 4.4.X series :?

First of all, thank you so much for your reply! I really appreciate the fast response time. Hm, but I'm going to agree and say that I can't get akonadi up and running for the life of me, I get about four error messages while starting it up and I'm not quite sure how to fix any of them, all I found was that it's probably mysql's problem and that every distro that isn't source based like Gentoo (my distro) seems to be up and running. Is there any other hidden solution?

I never succeeded in getting Akonadi to run in 4.3.x, but I'm running release-candidates for 4.4 now, and it's very different. Certainly in Fedora at least there is a problem in that Akonadi should start up automatically and it doesn't, so you have to manually start it before opening Kontact, but KAddressBook migrated successfully, and I didn't have to do anything to help that. I did have some initial problems, and have discussed them with the developers, so I presume that they are issues that will be (maybe already have been) ironed out. The problems encountered and the solutions for them are documented at http://userbase.kde.org/Akonadi#Common_Problems . I haven't tried sync-ing to google contact yet, though :-)
