kontact disturbed by vpnc connections

Sun Feb 14, 2010 11:27 am
Hi all,

from time to time, I have to open a vpnc connection to log in into the university system. Using kde 4.4.0 on kubunut, I do this on the command line via

sudo vpnc-connect,

which basically works fine. However, kontact, or rather kmail, really doesn't like this. Even after closing the vpnc connection, it is not capable of checking/sending mail. :-/

So I have two questions:

- How can I make kmail to work together nicely with my occasional vpnc connection? (konqueror etc don't have problems)

- Any idea how I can use vpnc without sudo but as a normal user?

Any input appreciated, best regards,
Zsaja

This is a bug with the IMAP / POP KIO protocol implementations.
This will be solved in KDE 4.5 assuming the Akonadi capable KMail 2 is shipped.

To fix this, please close KMail / Kontact and restart it.

Thanks for the info, and let's hope the new kmail will make it into kde 4.5.

any idea on how to start vpnc as a normal user? :|

Unfortunately I don't know much about vpnc, however running it as a user will not help in this situation as the bug is more fundamental.

Ok. I understand my second question is not related to the first one, and probably not even to kde. Still I would like to find a way of circumventing entering my root password every time I use vpnc. But maybe here is not the right place for this question, so I'll try somewhere else.

You could edit the sudoers file to allow you to run the vpnc command using sudo without a password.

Thanks for the hint, I now learned how to edit the sudoers file and it works fine :)
