I have had Kontact running the whole day and had absolutely none of the "freezing" problems. So everything seems to work the way it should
![]() On the other hand, Akregator is now freezing solid after startup. I will add more about this in a separate thread or add to someone else thread about it.

Funny! I haven't heard of anyone else having that problem with Akregator - it works fine here, too. It sounds to me as though the problem is in fetching the feeds, which it does immediately on opening it. Does it work properly if you launch it stand-alone?

Unfortunately, it freezes solid in standalone too. At some point, I had a lot of feeds in there to test. Maybe there is something left (although it shows an empty list...) so it would be handy to clean out the list of feeds?
With the PIM, things are looking up. It is definitely useable, but some things remains to be fixed. And the problems I have could very well be connected. I still get errors in MySQL. And I would LOVE to find a solution to it. Error messages that do not go away annoys me a bit. I like a system that is running well. And at the moment, I have problems with locale, pulseaudio and the PIM/MySQL/Akonadi. I'll open threads on the other two in the appropriate places ![]() I wish we had a little app the could make a handy summary of the system with all important settings so we could just run it and attach the result here. A lot less hunting around for info and a lot easier for people to help ![]() Here is my system: Kubuntu 10.04 - upgraded from 9.04 alpha6 through all Kubuntu/KDE releases. KDE 4.4.4 The system is updated with all the latest updates. The problem with the PIM started when the addressbook started using Akonadi. Up till then, I pretty much ignored Akonadi and everything surrounding it. If I right click on the Akonadi try icon and choose configure and then Test under Server Configuration, I get a list of things that are mostly ok. But three tests come up red: MySQL server log contains errors:
Previous Akonadi server error log found:
Previous Akonadi control error log found
What is the quickest way to clear out all the old stuff so I know if the errors are new? Only the MySQL error log has timestamps... The addressbook function in the PIM is very unpredictable. Very often it complains about no Akonadi when starting up. I have tried several things - quitting the PIM, restarting Akonadi, restarting the PIM... At some point, I get access to the addressbook without problems. But I have not been able to figure out a pattern yet.

Akregator occasionally mis-behaves for me, but I haven't seen the freezes. Do you actually use/need it? If not, go to #/.kde/share/config/kontactc and change this line:
[Plugins] kontact_akregatorpluginEnabled=true

The easiest way to ensure you have no MySQL problems, is to use the system wide instance of MySQL. You can find the configuration tab through Akonadi Tray.

I never use it, for RSS, I use RSSOwl. It is the best feed reader I have found for Linux so far. Open for other suggestions, though
![]() I have already disabled it from Kontact by using the configuration in Kontact. But thank you for the tip. But I agree, it seems very strange. But at the same time, I am very happy to at least have the rest working good enough for me to use.

First, install and configure the MySQL server package your distribution provides. ( Create a user for Akonadi to use, and a database ). The SQL below will perform the needed steps.
Then open the "Akonadi Server Configuration" tab from Akonadi Tray. Untick "Use internal MySQL server". Clear the options line, and set Host to "localhost" and Username to "akonadi". Then set Password to what you entered when setting up the database just before, and apply. Then try and start Akonadi.

Ok... I actually thought I did install MySQL separately last year...
Also, how do I transfer the addresses I have to the new database?

First, have you checked that the Personal Contacts resource is pointing to ~/.local/share/contacts and have you set that to be the default resource? (Instructions on http://userbase.kde.org/KAddressBook)
There is an import facility in KAddressBook. Assuming that your existing contacts are in std.vcf, just tell it to import vcard - and point it to the file.

Yes, it is.
I did this when I first encountered problems, and I have checked it again after that. So I know this should have been ok. And I have already changed some things in the Akonadi addressbook. BUT - opening the same setting now shows no trace of the Akonadi resource. So I am adding it again and setting it as default. AND - after doing that, we are back to freeze again... So the miracle in 4.4.4 was only a bug... The upgrade deleted the Akonadi configuration! Weird...
As mentioned above, I have already been using the Akonadi addressbook. So I need to knwo how to NOT loose what I have there if I need to move to a different MySQL database.

The MySQL databases used by Akonadi are purely caches, and do not contain any of your personal data ( including the Akonadi configuration as they are stored in plain-text files in ~/.config and ~/.local )

I ran the standard install and it got installed.
BUT - I have no idea how the Akonadi part plays together with the standard part. Also, I am really wondering how the database I set up last year for Krecipes made it into the newly installed MySQL... Is it possible that the KDE upgrade at some point made a wrong turn and took over the database I installed last year (including the Krecipes database) and it now is back to the standard MySQL database? I checked the versions of the akonadi MySQL version and the one I have now, and they are identical. When I do a check via Akonadi tray icon now, no errors come up. Well, actually I would not know as it do not test MySQL, but the Akonadi part is at least ok. I am not sure if what I have done under KDE resources is correct. Check the screenshot. Is this the correct way to do it? If I enable the resource I added, Kontact freezes shortly after starting up.
