limit on number of items in kaddressbook

I notice now that I have 244 names in one addressbook (in Kaddressbook) that display of newly added names is getting slower and some names seem to not be added at all.
What is the limit on the number of entries in a given address book? Would upgrading from my kde 3+ GUI increase the limit?
