I'm using KDE/Kontact in Archlinux, and (at least) since the last update, to KDE 4.4.3, the birthdays of my contacts are no longer shown in the Summary ("Upcoming Special Dates"). As far as I can see, this only applies to birthdays/anniversaries: other events and ToDo's are shown correctly. A quick google search brought this up: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=229082.

Anyone else is having this issue?

If this works correctly in KDE 4.4.2, please file a regression bug report at bugs.kde.org.

This post is quite old, but today I had the same problem and I solved it by starting Nepomuk.
