Hello,
I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 here, and KDE 4.4.2. I'd like to sync an addressbook between my dekstop and notebook, and keep it in sync. I'd rather keep my addressbook off of the cloud if possible, but would use it IF it worked well. At this time, the UbuntuOne (proprietary solution) is not an option with KDE and Akonadi, but there is is a GSOC project on it. I've tried the google contact resource in akonadi, but a lot of the fields in the Google api don't come through to the kaddressbook. therefore it's not a complete solution. I'm open to ALL suggestions, please comment below: Should I setup a LDAP server on the server on my LAN? Kolab? - seems like it might be overkill OpenGroupWare? - overkill? Just a file on a network share? - not sure this is good IF both computers wrote to the file at the same time. |

To achieve this is quite easy, but you need the "cloud" or a shared directory on a accessible location. You could use a know server and the sshfs utility to share a server directory across the internet securely.
In my case, I'm using Dropbox. So, the idea is to set up akonadi to use a folder to store vcal and vcard information. Basically you use the shared folder to sync this data into the "cloud", hence to other computers. Check out the latest parts on this blog entry: http://primalcortex.wordpress.com/2010/ ... onization/ namely from point 8. No need to setup LDAP, or any kind of server. Hope this helps! |
