Kmail reply button

Mon Jun 14, 2010 7:48 pm
Hi, what does the reply to button do by default? when I reply to a mailing list, it apparently takes the "List-Id:" field instead of the "From:" Is there a particular reason? In mailman you can specify if the reply should be directed to the list or the original poster, and even if I specify "poster" it gets to the list.

Is the reply button some kind of "smart" and tries to guess what's best for me? Is there some way to force the action of this button? It would also be nice for the forward button (like setting in-line as default)

Thanks for your help

I don't know why your KMail is set up in that way, if it happens, for instance, from your Inbox. The norm is to have mailing list messages in separate folders, and to set those folders to Reply to List. There's a very good reason for replying to list, by the way. The intention is that other people read the reply and can benefit from it. If you reply to the poster personally no-one else benefits.

I'm more an associative guy, and I have one inbox per E-Mail (me@local-chess-club.com, me@local-football-club.com, etc) as we are using mailing lists to contact all our club members, I receive mails from mailinglists in every inbox.

I understand your point of replying to list. But, In mailman (and I think in other mailinglist managers to), you can configure to who the reply should be sent (list or poster) so my problem is that kmail ignores this setting and always replies to the list even if thats not what you, nor the list creator wants.

I can live with this, but having a config dialog, where you can change the default behavior would be nice.

First, there is no relationship between KMail, your email client, and Mailman, the tool by which the list manager controls mail behaviour. There is no option such as you describe on the Mailman user interface. There is such an option on the Mailman Management page - which should only be available to the list managers. They decide what the default behaviour should be. If you are not happy with their settings, you should ask the list managers why they choose that setting. Please understand, this is not a KMail issue.

I'm sorry I think I did not explain well the problem. Ok, I'm the list manager, and I set the option reply to poster. Despite this fact kmail replies to the list not to the poster (all other MUA's reply to the poster not the list). So I think it's indeed a Kmail problem, who seems to use the "List-Id:" header for reply instead of "From:" (when I hit reply).

As you can choose more options when holding the reply button (reply to sender, reply to all, etc) I tried to use reply to sender which use the "From:" header to do the reply (that what I want). So me question was, is it possible (configurable) that a single click on reply uses the "reply to sender".

Thanks for your patience.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. In KMail, Reply to Sender is the default. It's possible to change that default. You might like to check which Reply icon is on your toolbar - open Settings > Configure Toolbars, and Main Toolbar <kmail_part> in the dropdown. If that is correct, check whether the folder in question has mailing list management set - if it is, that would use reply to list when possible. I repeat, Reply to Sender is the default setting.

How mailman handles mail is something that KMail can do nothing about. Have you examined the full headers of a message to see if there are any clues there?

I have the reply button which allows to select "reply to all", etc. If I replace this button with reply to sender my problem is solved, but I loose the sub-buttons "reply to all", etc.

I did not find the "mailing list management" is it in the folder options?

Yes I examined the full headers and the only place where the addresses kmail uses for the reply is defined is in the "List-Id:" header. This let me believe that when kmail sees this field (or another one that is mailing list specific) it uses this field as reply.

Is someone willing to try to reproduce this (subscribing to a mailing list with the setting reply_goes_to_list set to Poster, sending a mail, and the replying to this mail by using this button Image. What appears in the "To:" filed?)

First, the matter of the Reply icon. If it suits your purpose you can remove the multi-purpose Reply.... icon and replace it with a Reply to Author icon. Mailing List Managements - highlight the folder in question, go to Folder (in the main menu) and you will find it near the bottom of the list.
