Hi,
I know that kmail 4.5 beta1 is not ready yet and I post this topic not to complain with anyone but in the hope to help developers improve final kmail 4.5. My inbox has more than 25k email occupying around 6GB of disk space. I installed kdepim 4.5 beta1 Archlinux packages and started with a fresh account. I have akonadi 1.3.85 and disabled nepomuk in system settings in the hope to make kmail more usable. I am used to have a disconnected imap account for offline reading of emails, so I started enabling the option "download messages for offline use". After a couple of hours, the download was not completed and the akonadi imap resource became idle. I was unable to view any email, despite the .local/share/akonadi/db_data was already ~5GB in size. After relaunching kmail, I got an error message saying that akonadi was unable to start (with many errors in the log). I tried three times and I have never been able to complete the download of my whole inbox. Then, I tried with an online imap account, which successfully completed. I find two main problems: - the processing and grouping of messages is very slow. It takes around 10 seconds (while it took ~1 second with kmail 4.4) and it is very annoying to wait all such time every time I change folder or a message is deleted etc. Also, the cpu usage is very high (near 95% on my pentium IV 3.40 GHz). - if I delete an email, it is not deleted on the mail server. Thus, on the next synchronization, deleted messages appear again. Has anyone experienced similar problems? Can we hope that final kmail 4.5 will solve this (performance) issues? Many thanks! |

Did you create the IMAP account manually or was this done by the KMail migration helper?

Manually, using the wizard that appears as soon as kmail starts (I used a fresh account, i.e., with no .kde4 dir, no .local dir, no .config dir).
If you want me to provide more info/perform other tests, please ask. |

Ah, thanks for the reply.
So this is a single IMAP resource with caching enabled? And one folder (INBOX) contains all (or a lot) messages? Any other non-empty folders or subfolders? Cheers, _

Hi, thanks for your interest in my report. Sorry, I'll try to make me more clear.
I have around 20 folders in my emai account, where the Inbox folder has ~25k emails (occupying ~6GB) while the other folders contain less messages (100 on average). I did not use the migrator, as I started with a newly created user. I also disabled nepomuk in the system settings. Using the wizard that appears on the first launch of kmail, I tried to create a disconnected imap account (by checking "download messages for offline use"). The akonadi imap resource started synchronizing a folder with 400 messages (occupying 45MB) but never completed the synchronization. I tried three times with no success (every time deleting .kde4, .local, .config). Suddenly, the akonadi imap resource became idle and since then there was no progress. Clicking on such folder to view the message list does not show any message in the folder, despite the .local/share/akonadi/db_data folder had grown up to 4-5 GB. So, I gave up with creating a disconnected imap account and tried (by using a new user account) to create an online imap account (thus by not checking "download messages for offline use"). The synchronization was successful in this case and now I can see all the emails in my folders. However, there are two annoying issues: - processing and grouping emails is very slow and takes all my cpu. For instance, processing and grouping threads for my inbox takes around 10 seconds, while with kmail 4.4 (and disconnected imap account) took ~1 second. - deleting messages in kmail does not delete emails from the imap server. Indeed, after some time, deleted messages re-appear in my folders. So, briefly, I did not manage to create a disconnected imap account. With an online imap account I have the two problems mentioned above. Shall I submit a bug on bugs.kde.org? Cheers, Stefano |

Already done:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=243826 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=243829 The last one has also been marked as a blocker bug for the final 4.5 release by Torgny Nyblom. Thanks! |

For the incomplete migration - I believe I have read that it is a known problem with extremely large folders such as this Inbox. I believe it was said that you can make it complete by re-running the migration, but it may take a few starts to actually comnplete it. OTOH, even if my memory is correct, that does not mean that it's the current status - things move too fast.
