I shut the computer down since this last post of my. When I turned it back on I remembered that there were some 'configuration' options at the bottom of the screen at bootup. I'd seen them there before but had forgotten about them. There I was able to switch to the KDE desktop. It is so different it is almost like learning a new program all over again.

The post from google01103 was waiting for me. I looked at it but I was already in KDE.

Did this but there is no change in the handling of my group.
What else am I missing?

Mamarok tells me that the part that enabled Groups to function correctly is not in the main Kubuntu repositories. She says that you need to enable Backports in your package manager, then update again.

Again I ask your patience but Linux itself is new and confusing to me. Changing desktops didn't clarify anything for me (I find it harder to get around KDE than Gnome simply because I had just gotten used to Gnome.) Using both Synaptic and KPackageKit I searched for "Backport". I was going to attach a screenshot but do not see an attach option.

Under Synaptic about 40 packages were listed. About half of them started with:
linux-backports-modules . . .
Nothing in the names or descriptions means anything to me, nor do they seem related to my email program or address book.

Under KPackageKit I came up with several, also. Now I tried it again and "backport" comes up empty. What I had before appears to deal with wireless drivers ???

Don't worry about being new and feeling strange. The main reason for asking you to change temporarily to KDE was to be sure that you had everything needed for KMail and KAddressBook to function together. Tomorrow we'll get Mamarok back to tell you what you need to do to get that Backports repository. Sorry it's taking so long, but I'm sure we'll get there. People with a positive attitude usually do ;-)

That's because we don't provide attachments here (we have limited webspace ;) ) You might want to use a free image host next time, like http://imagebin.ca and link it here.

No, there is a missunderstanding. Under Ubuntu/Kubuntu you deal with different repositories where you can find different sorts of software, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Kubuntu (how to manage them in KPackageKit) or https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu (same for synaptic) for an explanation.
This is independant of either gnome or KDE, it is how software packages are handled, either way you change it, both apps will reflect it afterwards.
Read through it, and especially that:
"Unsupported Updates" enables the unsupported Backports repository.

Following those instructions you will get the Backports.

I just got aware that the updates we need are in a separate repository you don't have activated yet. So sorry, I was sure those were already in the regular repositories, my bad :( Please follow these instructions:

* open a terminal. In KDE it is called Konsole, so type Alt+F2, then the word 'konsole' (without the ') in the small window that appears on your screen and hit return, it will open a new window with a dark background.

* in the konsole, please type the following line:
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa

It will ask you for your user password, enter it and let it fetch the necessary informations.

* Open kpackagekit, go to the Software Updates and hit the Refresh button at the bottom of the window. You should now see updates for kdepim.

* Choose "Select all updates" and update your system.

You should now have the groups option in the KAddressbook when you restart it (in the File menu -> New -> New group).

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

I was tied up in meetings much of yesterday and this morning so I did not even get to see the last two posts until a couple of hours ago.

I should have thought to do something like that. However, it probably was not actually necessary that I provide any screenshots.

I tried to follow the above as close as I could (the screens did not always match. Then I moved on to Mamarok's post.

I did as outlined above, step-by-step. I was not sure if it would make a difference because I had the group option all along. I can add groups and add existing Contacts into the group. But I cannot find a way to put the group into the TO line of an email and have the email sent to all members of the group. This has all be unchanged since the 6th post where annew straighted me out on how to put the contacts in the group.

Deedon, do you have more than one email address? I always use a test group which consists of all the addresses I use. If you only have one address, put your own and my address (annew at kde dot org) into a test group. Call it Test. You should see the icon beside it has two people, not like the ordinary personal entries. If all is well to that point, open a new message and type Test into the To field. If the group is expanded correctly I should get the message. If it doesn't, paste here exactly what is returned to you.

I have been doing this with a different group I created. The only difference now is I created a new group called Test, as you suggested. I used my email address and my wife's email address. I do see the icon with my wife and myself and our email addresses. Following the rest of the instruction I get the following error message. The heading on the message is "Error - KMail", the text of the message is below.

Sending failed:
Message sending failed since the following recipients were rejected by the server:
Test@deedon-desktop (The server responded: "5.1.2 Use fully qualified domain name: Test@deedon-desktop")
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder.
The following transport was used:
David Deedon

I am currently using the KDE desktop since it was thought that it might work better than the Gnome. (I hope to be able to switch back to Gnome when this is solved, but I won't if the solution requires KDE.)

So it seems that the problem may not be the distribution list at all, but the mail transport, so let's look at that. It looks as though it tried to use a transport setting called David Deedon, so open Settings -> Configure KMail -> Accounts -> Sending tab. What is listed there?

If you have more than one entry, do this for each one - highlight the entry and select Modify. Take note of everything you find there and paste it in here. There is a possibility that you are using one transport for your main mail and something different for the distribution lists - though why that should be I don't know. Anyway, let's try to find out if everything on the transport tabs are as expected.

The first account is my primary account that I use for most of my emails and it is the ONLY account I've been using for testing the group mailing.

Account name: David Deedon
General tab:
Outgoing mail server = outgoing.verizon.net
Port = 25
Encryption = None
Advanced tab:
Server requires authentication is checked
Login = Deedon
Password (is provided)
Store SMTP password is checked
Authentication method = Plain
Send custom hostname to server is not checked
Precommand is blank

I have four email accounts with Verizon. Each of them are the same except for the account name and login. They all match the above.

I also have two accounts through nefw.net. They are both identical except for the account name and login.
Account name: deedon@deedonsblog.com
General tab:
Outgoing mail server = http://www.nefw.net
Port = 465
Encryption = SSL
Advanced tab:
Server requires authentication is checked
Login = deedon@deedonsblog.com
Password (is provided)
Store SMTP password is checked
Authentication method = Plain
Send custom hostname to server is not checked
Precommand is blank

Note that all accounts are STMP.

When I get my group mailings working, I will be doing some from one of the first group of accounts and I'll be doing some from each of the two accounts in the second group. However, to repeat, so far all testing has been done using the David Deedon account. Most of my regular emails go out through this account without any problems.

Certainly the verizon settings look correct. The only other thing that comes to my mind is that at one point I tried setting up a distribution list using addresses that were stored in the format "lastname,firstname <address>". Are you by any chance using that format? I found that the commas confused the distribution list.

I'm trying desperately to think where the domain part "deedon-desktop" is coming from, and it does sound rather like the problem I had then. If it is, try using one of the other formats for the names in question and see whether that cures it. If you want alphabitical sorting of the usual kind, you can still have "lastname firstname" as long as there is no comma, I think.

No, my format is first name followed by last name -- no punctuation marks.

I tried the same email from each of my identities but the results were pretty much the same. I also sent an email to myself and my wife using a separate TO line for each (instead of the test group) and they both went through fine. This was sent using a different identity. Then I did the same, sending to the same two addresses but from the (original) David Deedon Identity.
My wife uses an MS system and I was able to see the properties/details of the email after she received it. I don't know how to do that in Linux. In both cases I do not see the deedon-desktop, Instead I see david-desktop.

I've run out of ideas, so I've emailed the developers' mailing list to see if I can get any ideas from them. Sorry that solving this is taking so long.

Well, I know you are trying and I very much appreciate this fact. Also, the help of others who have replied.

It has occurred to me that I was previously set up with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. For reasons I'm not too sure about; a backup was made, the drive repartitioned, and Lucid Lynx reinstalled. I'm thinking that in the previous setup I had used deedon as my user name, while in this setup we went to david for my user name. We restored the KMail (but not the address book) from the backup. I had to redo part of the KMail setup. I believe that the part I redid was the SENT of each account.
Could this be part of the problem, and if so, what do I do to correct it?
