If you have a problem with with Kontact/Kmail complaining that it times out trying to get a lock, it seems to be related to akonadi resources that need the maildir access, i.e the mail dispatcher, akanotes, etc. Deleting them will allow the konatct and kmail apps to open normally.

Got fixed today. Quite sure it will be in the 4.5.0 release of kdepimlibs.

Are you sure it is fixed? I'm running today's trunk and still am getting the 'locked' error. I'm updating now again, so will report after that. Cheerio |

If a team were to fork KDE and strip out Akonadi (et al), I think it would be extremely popular.
At least in my case, I'd happily give up the social networking and other dependent components to have a stable system. When my co-workers ask why I still run KDE, I just smile because I have no answer. |

Well, lets say I was aware of a bug with a similar description and that one got fixed: http://bugs.kde.org/245481 Cheers, _

Ok, it was probably my fault. After Akonadi restart all is well again. Cheerio! @TomB17 Is this relevant? Please keep your rants in the thread you created for them, not here. |

I personally like the idea of a KOffice-like Kontact provided as an independent and separate binary for KDE. Separating the two widely-used components would IMO have a positive effect on the environment itself, helping to keep components modular and helping a lot with feature additions in an orderly manner. Also maintainability and optimizations would be made easier to gauge and a more progressive improvement to 3rd-party and bundled applications would be noticeable. I can actually envision a need to run kde just for kontact and koffice >:) |
