...click on Summary (left pane, top item). Every other part of Kontact works correctly. I had to do a new install my OS last night; Kubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04, build 27-Apr-2010 12:50. This was a new installation on a repartitioned and formatted HD. This is the only OS on this drive. I fully updated after installation and am running KDE 4.4.5.

From Kontact > Help > About:
Kontact Container
Kontact
Version 4.4.5

Kontact Summary
Version 1.1
Kontact Summary View
(c) 2003 The Kontact developers

When Kontact dies, and I click the x window button to close, a KWin warning comes up that says:
The window "Mail - Kontact" is not
responding. It belongs to the application
kontact (process ID = xxxx, hostname =
localhost).

Do you wish to terminate the application
process [i]including all of its child windows?
Any unsaved data will be lost.

Two buttons:
Terminate Application kontact
Cancel

As stated, pressing the Terminate button closes Kontact and I can
then restart it. I would like assistance in getting this resolved. What do I need to look at/for?

No one else is experiencing this; it's just me? I find that hard to believe. :(

I just tried again, the problem persists. I would very much like to get to the bottom of this.

I gather you have tried removing the various kontact*rc files?

Hmm. No. As only the Summary 'app' in Kontact is my problem...

These are the kontact*rc files in my user/home directory:
paul@mybrainonlinux:~$ locate kontact
/home/paul/.kde/share/apps/kontact
/home/paul/.kde/share/apps/kontact/default-akregator.rc
/home/paul/.kde/share/apps/kontact/default-calendar.rc
/home/paul/.kde/share/apps/kontact/default-journal.rc
/home/paul/.kde/share/apps/kontact/default-kaddressbook.rc
/home/paul/.kde/share/apps/kontact/default-kmail.rc
/home/paul/.kde/share/apps/kontact/default-ktimetracker.rc
/home/paul/.kde/share/apps/kontact/default-todo.rc
/home/paul/.kde/share/config/kontact_summaryrc
/home/paul/.kde/share/config/kontactrc

I notice that there is no /home/paul/.kde/share/apps/kontact/default-summary.rc (assuming it should exist). The /home/paul/.kde/share/config/kontact_summaryrc just contains:
Code: Select all
LeftColumnSummaries=kontact_korganizerplugin,kontact_todoplugin,kontact_specialdatesplugin
RightColumnSummaries=kontact_kmailplugin,kontact_knotesplugin

It is likely that one of those listed plugins is at fault. Try removing kontact_summaryrc.

Stopped Kontact. Renamed /home/paul/.kde/share/config/kontact_summaryrc to /home/paul/.kde/share/config/kontact_summaryrc_BAD and then restarted Kontact. Clicking on Summary still kills Kontact. Terminate it as previously stated, and then checked /home/paul/.kde/share/config/ to see if /home/paul/.kde/share/config/kontact_summaryrc was regenerated. It was, but the problem still persisted.

However, I found the (?) answer by Googling. I searched on kontact default-summary.rc

and saw a result from Old Nabble: updated to 4.4.2 problem with summary view in Kontact

In last post, YB says:
...I found out that the "special dates" view inside the summary plugin
is the one that causes the problem, without it everything is working good.

I launched Kontact and went to Settings > Configure Kontact... and unchecked Special Dates. Now clicking on Summary doesn't kill Kontact, and the Summary plugin appears as it should.

So something about Special Dates causes the problem. Would I be correct in assuming it has something to do with KDE Resources and akonadi? Do I have to establish something more in KDE Resources concerning Special Dates for use by akonadi?

You obviously haven't searched the forum :-) I must have written in at least a dozen topics that the SpecialDates plugin causes problems for many people. Removing all reference to it in the summary rc file usually fixes the problem.

I have no idea why it is a problem. I'm pretty sure a bug report was filed some time ago, but you should search for it and confirm it if necessary, giving your distro and version. If you don't find it, create a new report.

Well, I did search (after reading your reply) and only found two posts at best. But no matter. Thank you for the comment. It got me to looking on bugs.kde.org for any reported bugs on this. There are.

I've added my bit to Bug 226292 - Kontact becomes unresponsive when summary view is made the default initial view
