I must not have something configured incorrectly. When I attempt to save a new event on the calendar, it kills (freezes) Kontact, in the same way I posted about previously here about the Summary plugin.
Kubuntu 10.04 32-bit KDE 4.4.5 fully updated Akonadi is properly configured for email. The calendar works just fine, as long as I don't try to save an event to it. What am I missing? What do I need to check for and provide information on?

Not sure this was the "correct" solution, but...
In KDE Resources > Calendar I added: file-resource and pointed it to: ~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer/std.ics This is in addition to the akonadi-resource, type akonadi, set as standard, that I already had. With this addition, adding events to the calendar doesn't cause Kontact to freeze/die.

KOrganizer is not yet akonadi-enabled. Get rid of the akonadi resource and use your std.ics. You basically hit on the right solution, but I don't know whether leaving the akonadi one there will lead to problems or not. I tried it, and got rid of it.

Thank you for the information. I've removed the Calendar akonadi-resource in KDE Resources as you've suggested. My Calendar still works, so I'm happy.
