Trying the latest kdepim with kmail on IMAP and everything works fine except for setting the smtp outgoing server. When the information is entered (ex smtp.xxxxx.com) and password/ports, etc are set, the information refuses to save. It appears in the account box for a brief moment and then just disappears. Info for the incoming imap server remains and works fine.
I have uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled again, trashed the .kde folder and reinstalled, reset the configuration/accounts, etc and nothing seems to work.

Any solution ideas or workarounds for manually setting an outgoing account?

I am using ubuntu 10.04 LTS and the latest kde pim/kmail release from the Ubuntu software center

Thanks!

Have you checked the settings of ~/.kde*?

They should be read-write for your user and no access for others. They should also all be owned by your user. This can especially not be the case if you have run KDE applications using sudo.

Thanks, bcooksley!!Problem solved!!

After a couple more reinstalls, and a bit more frustration, I did check ".kde" permissions and found that it appeared the same as the permissions on ".evolution". Tried resetting folder permissions (just in case) and it didn't help at all.

At the end, I did a completely fresh reinstallation (trashed the .kde folder and made a new one during reinstall) and changed all the permissions/ownership on the folders via Dolphin, applying to all subfolders, etc. BEFORE I tried to open and configure the program. That seemed to do the trick. After this everything seemed to 'stick' where it supposed to.

Bottom line - I'm positive you were correct on the permissions settings, but it must have been in a subfolder somewhere. Couldn't change the permissions if I tried to config first, but it worked the other way around.

For future reference, the following commands will sort out problems with permissions on ~/.kde directories.

Code: Select all
sudo chown -R $(id -un):$(id -gn) $(kde4-config --localprefix)
chmod -R 700 $(kde4-config --localprefix)

Please run this only at the command line, logged out of KDE.
