Kubuntu 10.04
KDE 4.5.1 Kontact 4.4.5 Under Contacts, I created several Address Book Folders. I created a new contact and designated the Address Book Folder to put it in. I input all the data for the new contact and saved it. When I go back an Edit the contact, only the Display Name and Home Phone are shown. I can't edit any of the other 'blank' fields that I had completed. But, the contact is still recognized when creating a new email, although, not with the Nickname - I have to type the email address, which is then displayed for selection. What's with this? ![]()

If you check in the raw data ( located in either ~/.local/contacts or ~/.kde4/share/... ) are the fields present? Also, check to make sure that the resources are shown as "online". Your resource settings will contain the full path to where the raw data is stored.

'raw data' 'resources are shown as "online"' ?? KDE 4.5.1 is an entirely different beast than 4.4.5. KDE Resources doesn't exist in System Settings. I have been unable to locate where created contacts are saved. "~/.local/contacts' isn't a correct path - it's ~/.local/share/contacts, and mine only contains a .directory file. "~/.kde4/share/..." isn't a correct path - it's ~/.kde/share/..." and I've looked there in apps/kontact and there are no folders or .vcf files. I've looked in ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/ as well, and although there are two .vcf files (std.vcf and std.vcf_1) they are empty. I have no idea where contacts are being kept/maintained in KDE 4.5.1.

Interesting.
Okay, from within my production LL 10.04 KDE 4.5.1 OS, I accessed my testing /home partition and navigated to ~/.local/share/contacts and created the folders for my Personal Contacts I had "created" from within Kontact. I then rebooted into my testing OS and launched Kontact. Now, when I edit my contacts, all the fields I had put data into are shown, and I can edit the contact as I want. I still can't locate where the actual contact records are being stored/saved. One should not have to create these folders from outside of Kontact, but obviously, you have to, as doing so from within Kontact apparently only creates 'pointers' within a database? Can you please explain how Kontact/Kmail works under KDE 4.5.1. Is akonadi being used? Mysql? When you create a contact, where is it saved? What is it called/named (file extension)?

Figured it out. Kontact/Kmail is working properly in KDE 4.5.1.
First, akonadi is still used and required. Second, KDE Resources does still exist in KDE 4.5.1, but it's new location in System Settings > Personal Information seems an odd place to have put it. What were the developers thinking? This is a KDE resource and should have been kept 'out in the open' in System Settings. I followed my previously documented steps to get things set up and then rebooted. My email contacts were gone, so I had to recreate them, but other than that, Kontact/Kmail works as it should. I have experience with this issue. A newbie will not. That such a basic necessity as email can't be pre-setup by the OS installation process (the basics, not the user-specifics: ISP user account, POP, SMTP, etc settings) so that after the user sets up their email account settings it works as expected, is unacceptable. ![]()
