I have lost all Internet connection. Have no idea what to do. HELP! :'(
Any help getting it back greatly appreciated. Kubuntu 10.04
Logged out, shut down, 3 days trying to solve, so far...
Not - ADSL/roughter, or cable.

Having a program such as Kontact working properly is very important part of a brain injury victims life, "memory damage" (THANKS for the program)

Think it happened while using Kontact to set up a pop mail transfer (first time).
At the same session also imported and edited contacts (first time).
When looking at the File – Edit – etc drop down menus I clicked on some “configure ????” that I am guessing has selected the option of {use local server} which I do NOT have. This is just a guess.

The programs affected are – knetwork manager (does not run). Kpackagekit, synaptic package manager, Firefox, Konqueror etc.

Feeds, Journal and Popup Notes have not been used yet.

Contact is not working, a large red square with a white cross appears with
“Akonadi not operational.
Details....”

How do you connect to the internet? Do you connect wirelessly or via a cable connected to your computer?

If you use Wireless, then ensure that the settings in KNetworkManager are correct. You may need to remove and add your connection again.

For Wired, right click on KNetworkManager's icon and click the "Auto eth0" entry. If that doesn't work, check the connection, and post the output of "ifconfig" from Konsole please.

Cable to Billion roughter/modem (firewall OFF), all hardware checked - ok.
Live CD access to world wide web works fine, through LAN 2 and 4 (checked, just in case, "LAN 1 using now, Ubuntu 8.04.4, different computer")

Wireless has not yet been used, turned OFF
KNetworkManager is not accessable through GUI.

NO "Auto eth0", no manager.

Output from ifconfig

Related Question to running KDE GUI:
Would SUSE be a better option than kubuntu, what 64 bit version would you recommend re: is KDE 4.5 stable / usable enough for a beginner?

Thanks for answering post. Rely lost out here.

Is "NetworkManager" running?

The following command should list something:
Code: Select all
ps aux | grep -i networkmanager

You should see output like follows:
Code: Select all
root      1627  0.0  0.3  18196  1548 ?        Ssl  Sep10   0:01 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager

Hope this helps. :'(
Is there still hope?

I have noticed that file manager program is crashing.
Have had to restart the computer twice while trying to sort my files for removal / backup.

name@namecomputer:~$ ps aux | grep -i networkmanager
root 881 0.0 0.0 77324 3816 ? Ss 14:11 0:00 NetworkManager
name 1460 0.0 0.4 207676 17508 ? S 14:12 0:00 /usr/bin/knetworkmanager

If you open Konsole, what is the output of this command?
Code: Select all
ifconfig

The following *may* work temporarily to restore network access until you reboot/logout:
Code: Select all
dhclient eth0

The above commands will need to be run as root.
