"New message to" ignores templates

Mon Oct 18, 2010 3:53 am
Hi,

if you right click on an email address in an email and choose "New message to" an new message is created that ignores the "New message" standard template. Is there some setting to correct this or is it a bug?

Thanks,

David.

I frequently use that method to start new conversations and have never seen a problem, so we need more details please. Exactly what is the problem you are experiencing? What happens and what doesn't happen when you start a message this way? Don't forget to mention distro and kmail versions.

Sorry, I forgot to add the details I usually add to such emails.

I am running openSUSE 11.2 with a KDE upgrade to 4.4.4 release 3 which runs kontact 4.3.5. rpm says that the packages are:

kmail-4.3.5-0.1.4.x86_64
kontact-4.3.5-0.1.4.x86_64
kdebase4-4.3.5-0.1.1.x86_64

I note that there are a few kde 3 packages still installed:
e.g. kdebase3-3.5.10-28.6.x86_64
kdebase3-kdm-3.5.9-65.2.x86_64
kdebase3-nsplugin-3.5.10-28.6.i586
kdebase3-runtime-3.5.10-28.6.x86_64
kdebase3-samba-3.5.10-28.6.x86_64
kdelibs3-3.5.10-32.4.1.x86_64
kdelibs3-32bit-3.5.10-32.4.1.x86_64
kdelibs3-arts-3.5.10-32.4.1.x86_64
kdelibs3-default-style-3.5.10-32.4.1.x86_64
kdelibs3-default-style-32bit-3.5.10-32.4.1.x86_64
kdelibs3-doc-3.5.10-32.4.1.x86_64

This is running on an i7 Core with 8GB RAM.

So what actually happens? You click on an address in an existing mail and a compose window comes up? What are you expecting to see that is missing?

If you go to KMail's Settings -> Configure KMail -> Composer page -> Standard Templates are the templates all there?

When I click the "New message" button I get:
Hi ,

Best regards,

David.

--

<My signature>

i.e. the standard template has been used.

When I right click on one of the addresses in an existing email and choose "New message to" I get:

--

<My signature>

The standard has not been used.

My standard template is:

%REM="Default new message template"%-
Hi %TOFNAME,

%CURSOR

Best regards,

David.

Additionally, if I click on a mailto: link in a web page then the template is used.

My kmail settings under Composer has templates for "New message", "Reply to sender", "Reply to all/..." and "Forward message".

All have similar content.

I have just upgraded to openSUSE 11.4 which is running KDE 4.6.2. The behaviour is still the same. Either right clicking on an email address and choosing "New message to..." or simply clicking on an email address and I get a new message with nothing in the body. Whereas starting a message in any other way fills the body with my signature etc.
