Kmail , where is my spam ?

Mon Nov 22, 2010 12:58 pm
Hi ;=)

Can you tell me how to access to my spam directory ?
I can't see it and there are some messages i'm not receiving.

Isn't the default option to receive all messages in the incmoing box and then to filter them as spam or ham ?

Thanks ;)

i'm using :
kmail --version
Qt: 4.7.1
KDE Development Platform: 4.5.3 (KDE 4.5.3)
KMail: 1.13.5

Unless you have a SPAM tool installed for KMail to use, no SPAM filtering is done. This is true for Anti-virus checking as well. You would have run the Tools > Anti-Spam Wizard... to configure what and how KMail would handle SPAM.

If this has not been done, and you are not getting emails that you are expecting, check with your ISP, as they might be running some sort of SPAM filtering.

When bogofilter is installed, and you configure it: KMail > Tools > Anti-Spam Wizard..., the default location for deleted SPAM is KMail trash unless you specify some other location.

Hello ;=)

Ok, my mail and my spam are in the trash directory.

How can i do to train bogofilter so that only spam goes in trash ?
is training it from now on (everyday sorting manually ham and spam) enough ?

Google for "bogofilter kmail" and you'll find a number of articles about how people set up bogofilter and trained it. Most of them are very old, but if you read a few you'll soon get the idea of how it works and what you can do to help it. One thing I would say is that you should start training with a very large number of non-spam messages and as many spam messages as you can.

I recommend that you create some training folders - I don't know whether the KMail set up does this for you, since I filter at server level. I have bogotrain-ham and bogotrain-spam for this purpose. You would move spam directly into the bogotrain-spam folder, and copy good mails of every type that you normally receive (computing, family mail, any other interests you have) into the bogotrain-ham folder.

Remember that the spammers are very active. They create variations on every type of spam to keep the filters guessing. My filters move less obviously classified stuff into an Unsure folder (I move them manually into ham and spam folders) - and sometimes they look exactly the same as ones where spam had been classified, but there will be sufficient subtle differences to make bogofilter unsure, so training has to continue. I make it a rule that I re-train every time I have collected 100 spam messages - since I use many mailing lists, that's fairly frequent. My training method consists of running this command in Konsole:

Code: Select all
bash /usr/share/bogofilter/contrib/contrib/trainbogo.sh -c -H /home/anne/Maildir/.INBOX.bogotrain_ham/cur/ -S /home/anne/Maildir/.INBOX.bogotrain_spam/cur/

(This is a single command, continuous)

If I get failures to retrain, I re-run it until I get no more than two or three unrecognised. I accept that if the spammer has been very clever it may be a while before the spam score has built up sufficiently for that particular form to be recognised. Once I've trained on a set of messages, I delete them and start collecting again.

Anne, thanks for the detailed way to improve filtering with bogofilter. I'm not sure i'm going to train it so thoroughly though. What i was planning to do is sorting mails from incoming box manually for a few weeks, plus checking that trash is not getting ham mail anymore. it seemed to work ok so far ;)

...Btw today i upgraded my packages and now have KMail 2.0.89 (kde 4.6 beta1) , which removed translation but this is a different topic.
