Kontact continues to crash after update...

The other day I updated to version 4.4.7 in hopes that there would be some bug fixes. Unfortunately there were not. I have posted bug reports, written to specific developers... but no response or changes.

This is one of the bugs (the most serious):
Every time I open Kontact and select "settings"->"configure kontact" from the menu, Kontact immediately crashes.
Here's the terminal readout:
---------------------
Bus::open: Can not get ibus-daemon's address.
IBusInputContext::createInputContext: no connection to ibus-daemon
kontact(31225)/kio (KDirWatch) KDirWatchPrivate::removeEntry: doesn't know "/home/tim/.kde/share/apps/kabc"
kontact(31225)/kdecore (KConfigSkeleton) KCoreConfigSkeleton::writeConfig:
kontact(31225)/kdeui (kdelibs): No such XML file "/home/tim/.kde/share/apps/kontact/local-calendar.rc"
-------------------------
Can someone please advise me on this bug? Seems to me that it's serious enough that it should be a high priority. Or is there something I can do to fix this... as my guess is that not everyone has this problem.

I'm running Lucid Lubuntu 64-bit version (with the initial install being Kubuntu).

Please run "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental", and remove *ui.rc from ~/.kde4/share/apps/kontact/

I ran kbuildsysoca4, but then could not find any *ui.rc files in the folder that you specified. I searched the whole home directory for *ui.rc files and I only found one (kdepim related) in: ~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer/ I renamed korganizerui.rc and then ran Kontact again... This did not fix the problem, Kontact crashed again when clicking on Kontact Config.

BTW when I run Kontact in terminal one of the lines states:
No such XML file "/home/tim/.kde/share/apps/kontact/local-calendar.rc

If you try to backtrace this with DrKonqi, can you post the output? ( from the Developer Information tab )

I reported the bug again after I updated to 4.4.7... will this backtrace do?

Please move ~/.kde4/share/config/kmailrc elsewhere. You may need to reconfigure your email accounts afterwards, hence why you should move this file, not delete it.

Did not solve the problem. I have amended the bug report to: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=257386

Unfortunately I don't know why it crashes there, but it could be a regression in KMail. I suggest moving the previous kmailrc back in the meantime. Also, make sure all elements of your system are fully updated.

Well thanks for trying to help out... hopefully someone in Kontact development will look into this in the near future as it really makes most of Kontacts options unusable.

Note: I just searched all local folders for *ui.rc files that there are some in: /usr/share/kde4/apps/kontact/kontactui.rc Could it be that these have been installed incorrectly... or should I try to delete the *ui.rc files in this directory?

Do not try to delete those files, it will render Kontact completely unusuable. One thing you could do is to try and reinstall KMail itself ( as that is what is causing Kontact to crash )

You were right in saying that the problem was KMail related. I got Kontact Config working and here's what I did:
1) used Synaptic to remove KMail -- and at the same time it removed KDEpim and a couple other packages. Then I tried running Kontact and opening Kontact Config. The result: CRASH
2) then I reinstalled just KMail -- just in case, I checked Kontact again. Result: CRASH
3) this time I purged KMail - ran Kontact again... the result: CRASH
4) finally... this is what worked: I found the KMail directory... renamed it... ran Kontact... tried Kontact Config... and it opens and with the brief testing that I did, everything seems to work again

BUT: I installed KMail again without using the renamed KMail folder... the result: Config Kontact causes Kontact to crash again.
SO: it appears that I will not be using KMail until this problem is solved.

If you have any other ideas let me know...

tjk,
Which kmail folder did you rename? I renamed ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail,but Kontact still crashes if i try to access Kontact settings.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike, this is my exact renamed folder: ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail-bak... I've been using Kontact ever since I renamed the kmail folder without any problems with the configure Kontact option. But if renaming the folder didn't work for you, then I'm not sure what to suggest... did you try exactly what I did (ie #1, #2, #3 & #4)? Make sure you backup anything KMail related that you want to preserve before doing all four steps. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I can't figure out how to uninstall kmail separately, it wants to uninstall a bunch of other stuff important stuff, including the entire KDEPim and virtualbox?? I'll live with it for now, I had the same problem about KDE 4.1 and after a few updates the problem disappeared. In fact I posted about it on this forum somewhere.

Hi,

I had the same problem..feeds just began to freeze kontact...
I read your post and I just moved the

~/.kde/share/apps/akregator/data/
and
~/.kde/share/apps/akregator/Archive

to backup folders (left data and Archive empty...) and restart kontact...lost previous posts but its working now (with diferent feed sources...)

Thank you for your help.
