KMail Package Dependency

Mon Dec 20, 2010 7:57 am
After a daily software update with KPackageKit, I noticed that KMail had been removed. While trying to reinstall it, I received the following error:

A package dependency could not be found..... Details
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kmail: Depends: libkdepim4 (= 4:4.4.8-0ubuntu2~maverick1~ppa3) but it is not going to be installed.

Is this a temporary problem in the Beta release I'm testing?

Thank you.

Have you been using the KDE 4.6 Beta repositories? Try running "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" as root.

Thank you.
Yes, I am using the KDE 4.6 Beta repositories. I also ran "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" as root.
I ran "sudo apt-get install kmail" and still receive the following error:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kmail : Depends: libkdepim4 (= 4:4.4.8-0ubuntu2~maverick1~ppa3) but it is not going to be installed

Because KDE PIM 4.6 will not be released alongside KDE 4.6 itself, you now need to get KDE PIM 4.6 from a different repository. You can get this from the "regular backport PPA".

Note that you only need to follow this route because you were using the KDE 4.6 Beta, prior to PIM -withdrawing from the release cycle. Those who have not installed any 4.6 packages prior to now should NOT use this PPA.

Your statement "Note that you only need to follow this route because you were using the KDE 4.6 Beta, prior to PIM -withdrawing from the release cycle." caused me to look more for a solution. I noticed on the page http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.6-beta-2 If you want to try KDE PIM 4.6 you need to add the Kubuntu Experimental PPA.
ppa:kubuntu-ppa/experimental

I had missed that. I added that PPA to my repository list and KMail and the other PIM packages installed without error. The BETA programs have certainly improved and will be a great asset when in full release.

Thank you for your assistance. I hope this information helps others as well. I wish I could do more to assist than simply testing and sending bug reports for the BETA products.

Thank you once again!
