I just did a fresh install of Slackware 13.1 with KDE 4.4.3, which I immediately upgraded to KDE 4.4.5. When I start Kontact, I get the following error messages from Akonadi:

Funny thing is, once the error message is closed, Kontact works fine. This happens at boot time if Kontact was left running, and if it was not it occurs whenever Kontact was started. If this was my computer the problem could be lived with, but it's not. Nor can I upgrade to KDE 4.5.x. What can I do about this?

This is probably a race condition, in particular the Resource Agent check, which I think was solved in a later release of KDE. As a workaround, I simply recommend ensuring Kontact, etc. are closed prior to logging off. Could you upgrade to KDE PIM 4.4.9?

Not so simple, I'm afraid. Even if Kontact is off at login, the errors occur when it's launched. I might be able to upgrade PIM, but I don't know. I know the KDE 4.5 packages in Slackware -current will not work right on 13.1 for the most part, but maybe PIM is an exception.

The KDE PIM team is still making releases from KDE 4.4.* which should be compatible, i'm not sure though.

If you open Konsole, stop Akonadi, then start it again ( run "akonadictl stop" then "akonadictl start" after about 20 seconds ) does it still produce error messages?

No error messages there. However, I should probably point out that Kontact only gives errors on first launch. After that I can shut it down and re-launch and not get errors.

This is likely a startup race condition issue in this case then. Other than running "akonadictl start" prior to opening Kontact, there isn't much you can do at this time.

I'll put it in .bashrc and see what happens next reboot.

Am delighted to report that putting akonadictl start in .bashrc did the trick.
