Can someone tell me how to configure kmail so that it will only search the inbox in the imap configuration when checking for new mail? I the “Check interval” set for 5 minutes. At present it will scan all my archived mail folders on my server for new messages, when the only place that needs to be checked in the inbox.
I have messages on the server for years back that I access from time to time for research. Since kmail is scanning all those folders every five minutes, it's causing an unnecessarily work load and taking a long time for new messages to appear. If it only scanned the inbox for new messages the new messages (as other email clients does) the new messages would appear instantaneously. Thanks in advance for any comments on this. -- L. I have the same question. I don't need to sync all my folders, just my inbox.

In Kmail documentation I find: "IMAP accounts will not use this inbox. The inbox is located on the IMAP server." I'm trying to understand this. I'm having difficulty wrapping my mind around it. I'm trying to migrate from Win7 to Kubuntu, and from Pegasus to Kmail and from POP3 to IMAP. I normally use my email client by downloading all new email (since the last time I checked) to my local inbox (in Pegasus this is called the New Mail folder). I manage my email from my local inbox, either deleting, reading and or filing it in a folder. With Kmail, I get notifications that I've received new email but I can't access that email from my local inbox. I think you can understand my confusion.
The only way I can think of to manage this is to set up filters on my email's server to take all of the new emails in my inbox and file them (filter them) in another folder(s). Then I need to subscribe to the folders that I have filtered the emails to. I could try to filter all new emails to a folder called "New Mail" and subscribe to that.

I think the following should do the job:
Go to your kmail settings, click the retrieval settings drop down menu to your account name and uncheck all the boxes. On each folder you don't want to auto update, right click and go to the folder properties dialogue. Click the retrieval tab and uncheck the "use options from parent folder and account" to activate the custom settings. Set the automatically synchronise option to 0 so it says "Never". Click Ok and you're done. |

OK, I'm progressing in my understanding of IMAP. I've set the Trash and Spam folders to never retrieve.
Thanks for your reply, it was helpful.
