Hello.
Recently I’ve got Nokia n900. Although it is not a brand new phone these days I decided to give it a try and see if it is better than Motorola Milestone (Droid). I read ‘Getting Things Done’ book and have tried to implement this idea in my life. (I like it). So I realised the idea behind to-do lists and I’m trying to use it as much as I can. I decided to choose KDE PIM as my to-do lists/Calendar/etc. Now all my tasks are stored on my PC. Not quite mobile way to cope with them. What I am after is a means to sync them (mainly tasks and calendar) with my n900/Maemo. I have very rudimentary knowledge how to do it: I know that it must be a middle ware — a software between PC and my mobile – namely – server. The problem is not with lack of this kind of software but with accessibility for customary user. I don’t have knowledge and frankly speaking I can’t run my own server. I would like to either purchase a subscription or if it is possible to use a free account. I know there is Kolab by KDE developers, there is egroupware and such. What I don’t know is how and where I can subscribe/buy/rent/etc. an account. Could you help me and tell me how I can make better use of my n900, syncing it with my desktop Kontact? Thanks in advance! ps Please don’t tell me about Google – I don’t want to use it. |

Hej,
I also would like to sync my n900. Up to now I read about setting up a funambol-server for syncing, but I did not want to invest a lot of time to setting it up. I think this years' google summer of code does include a project to implement an easy-to-use way. I am hopefully looking forward to that. |

Hallo!
My ‘internet acquaintance’ syncs his n900 with egroupware. He told me there is no problem with tasks, calendar. What he hasn’t tried is contacts. He has a private account on his university. As I wrote the problem is not with availability of servers. There are plethora of them and I am sure they are fantastic and on the other hand, open source. The problem is with the remainder – the eco system around them. I am sad that even though Kolab server is known among KDE users (I suppose so), there is lack of providers delivering it – both commercially and for free to some extent (as with Ubuntu one). As an example I’ll give GIT VCS – it is very known open source solution. And there are numerous providers providing services. I am sure you heard about Github, didn’t you? So *it is* possible. Sorry for griping about it. Positive note is that, there will be OwnCloud accounts available for those who can’t run their own server. |
