I am on Kubuntu 10.10. KDE 4.5. Kmail 1.13.5
How do I configure Kmail so that it downloads messages only in select IMAP folders for offline viewing? Other folders are available like ordinary IMAP folders - headers are available. But messages need to be fetched when needed. I will be using IMAP with Gmail. I am utterly confused by IMAP/ Disconnected IMAP/ Serverside Surscription/ Local Subscription, etc. How I wish the user interface was simpler! |

This is functionality should be possible in KMail based Akonadi, which has not been released at this time. At this time you can only do either full online or full offline (disconnected) IMAP.
Server and client side subscriptions control which folders are retrieved and shown by KMail.

By when do we expect the release of Kmail based on Akonadi?
Emphasis mine. When you say retrieve, you mean retrieve and kept for offline viewing or retrieved as in retrieving headers also? In other words, if I locally unsubscribe a folder, (a) will the folder just not show or (b) the folder will show, the headers will show but it will not download and store messages for offline viewing? But the messages will be downloaded as needed? |

Retrieved in this case means shown in KMail. Those folders it doesn't retrieve won't be shown at all, and will not be downloaded from the server in any form.
If you use normal IMAP, then the folder will be accessed as an online folder. If you use Disconnected IMAP, it will be fully downloaded as is usually done with disconnected IMAP folders.
