Hello,
I use two email accounts. I can't quite wrap my mind around why when replying to a message on one account, kmail sends from the other. Granted one of the send accounts is set as default, but wouldn't it make more sense for strange people like me with two emails, to simply auto-detect which account is being used and send with that account's credentials? I've looked into identities, is the only way to enable this behavior, to actively switch the default identity in the settings menu? Is it possible to have the two identities sitting side by side in two separate tabs? (Bonus): I can think of no good reason why you would want to receive mail from 2+ accounts but only send with one... i know this is also default in outlook but ... can you also explain the logic here? wouldn't this be confusing to recipients, sending mail to one and receiving mail from another account? Sorry if this sounds facetious, I'm just trying to understand, maybe my use of the program is outside the norm... Thanks for your insights and help, alex |

okay, i've notice that you can hold down send and choose the account. Yay.
However, is there a way to automate this so that it's tied to the account you're reading/receiving from? Also, since you guys are the developers, what is the logic behind having a default send account for multiple email receive accounts, or essentially not ting the two together? Thanks again for your help/insights Alex |

Hi,
when I still had kmail I also had a number of different email accounts and one identity. My solution was to display the email transport so switching was easy - which I believe you have already done. As for hitting the reply button on account 2 and it automatically selects the mail transport from account 1 - this is odd. I don't remember whether I had that behaviour or not. Thunderbird, however, manages to get the right transport for the right account. Any kmailers out there who can enlighten us?

Don't use Kmail but that's strange behavior, normally one would expect each account to have it's own send & recieve settings (I use Opera and it behaves as expected). Might wish to check http://bugs.kde.org and and see if it been reported or requested.

Unfortunately, although you can set a number of smtp accounts in KMail, only one can be default and that will always be used unless you manually change it. There's no way to tie the sending protocol to accounts. You can tie them to identities, using Identity > Advanced Tab > Special Transport.
I also turn on display of the sending account so that I can switch if necessary. Also, when away from home I enable my Roaming account for automatic checking for downloads, disabling my home-LAN account, and change the default sending protocol to my gmail account. It does mean that I have to remember to do this, but it works for me. That's all I need, really, my local one (my IMAP server forwards them to my ISP's smtp) and my gmail for Roaming. It's not going to cure the problem of using different sending protocols with different accounts, though. Looking back through this thread, though, I think there may be a misunderstanding. Recipients normally never see anything about the sending account. I wonder if Alex was actually thinking of identities? If so, that can be fixed if he wishes it, as described above.

You can also associate an identity with each folder, so replying to messages from such a folder will be sending from the identify associated with it.
I use that a lot even when sending through the same SMTP server, e.g. to have different signatures, etc. Cheers, _

I also use that, a great deal. Combine it with the Special Transport option, and you can cover almost every need.
