First when sending mail I got a message "Error: Local Folders: Unsupported type", and the mail would just show up in the outbox unsent. I had moved the local folders from the default location so I tried deleting the local folders resource to let kmail recreate in the default location. Now I get no errors but the same behavior otherwise. There are a lot of messages about being disconnected frequently. akonadi debugger is pretty verbose so I'm not sure what info is needed.
Gentoo running KDE 4.6.3 Kmail from origin/4.6 @ b4217d3 Using IMAP and a gmail SMTP server akonadi-server is from origin/master @ 8eb0dba using a local mysql backend (not qt-sql)

There are a set of pages. all linked, dealing with Akonadi problems. Start with http://userbase.kde.org/Akonadi_4.4/Troubleshooting. Those verbose messages should help you identify which problem is yours - I'm guessing it is the database part. Once you have sorted that and Akonadi can start without errors (if you are left with one that simply reports that there are errors in an older logfile you can ignore that), go on to read http://userbase.kde.org/Akonadi_and_AddressBook and the linked pages. You will need to set up your resources, but all the instructions are on those pages.
