I am on KDE 4.9.3 and the Categories field do exist for me and have done so for some time. Have no idea for how long though but I searched for "Family" and found 2 "reasonably recent" added persons so perhaps 4.7.x or so?

Hello Sinclair,
Thanks for your reaction. By "searching for Family", do you mean that there is a Category fold down menu where you can choose for the Category Family, or do you mean that you used the Search/Filter function? The last one does filter on any contents (as it seems to me) and dus also filters those addresses which havee a category Family. But it will also show you the address of the "Family Planning Organisation" because that has the same string somewhere. But "Family Planning Organisation" is not in my Category of "Family", which I give to the members of my family. Also typing a string in a search field is very different from two clicks to open and select a predefined Category. Hope you understand what I mean.

I see what you mean and am not sure actually... let me see if I can find a similar case among my contacts. I do mean the Search/Filter function btw, no dropdown that I am aware of |

Greetings,
I spent a bit of time adding a Category to each contact, then a couple of releases later Category was gone. All the time spent wasted!! I'm already compiling kdepim-4.4.11.1 to get kmail1, so what would a little extra time matter to get a kaddressbook back with Category. Does anyone know what version of kdepim has the kaddressbook with Category? Does this source still exist? ddan |

I am on openSUSE 12.2 with KDE 4 now, but KDE3.5 is still available and I did not install Kontact, Kaddressbook, Kmail, ... from the deault repositories, but installed (only those PIM applications) from a KDE 3.5 repository still made available by some people for openSUSE 12.2 Thus I do not have the need to compile from source.

Hello,
Kaddressbook was once the Swiss Army Knife of addressbook editors. As the title of this post states, functionality was lost with the implementation of Kmail2. One of the critical features missing for me is the ability to edit contacts by adding and editing categories. While there is a work around for filtering by categories using the search field and I am thankful that Kaddressbook does not clobber pre-existing categories when imported, I still miss the editing function. Sorting contacts into various folders is not the equivalent. If a contact is a member of more than one category, this is stored in the one unique contact entry. With folders, when adding a contact to a second folder, the contact is replicated. Now multiple contact entries must be updated when revisions are necessary for the same person represented by contacts. Android phones use Groups. One of the best non-Google tools for syncing contacts is CardDAV-Sync. It will map Categories to Groups on the Android when syncing. Unfortunately, there is no way to edit categories in Kaddressbook. My work around is to currently to use CardDavMATE off of my DAViCal server. I know of no way to map folders to Android Phone Groups during sync. How can the functionality of Category editing be added back into Kaddressbook? For those that use Categories as a way of defining group memberships, it is a show stopper for Kaddressbook. Please file a bugs on bugs.kde.org, kaddressbook component, to request readdition of this feature. In any case, KAddressbook migrated to the new system way before KMail (the former in 4.4, the latter in 4.7).

I will file a bug on bugs.kde.org, kaddressbook component to ask that a removed feature be put back.
Kaddressbook was the first to migrate to the Akonadi approach; none of the other components were ready. Kaddressbook wasn't ready either but at least back then, one could chose to continue using the old Kaddressbook. There are some who think Kmail2 and associated Akonadi components are still not ready for prime time. http://dilfridge.blogspot.com/2013/05/personal-experience-and-opinion-kmail2.html |

Are there any news in this topic?
I installed KAddressbook Version 5.19.3 (21.12.3). I configured the access to my CardDAV Posteo server and all contacts could be read. Unfortunately the categories of the contacts are not accessible. However, I can filter for the category which means that the information is available. The only thing is I cannot change the category. I read the "KAddressbook Handbook". First picture in chapter 4 "Adding or Editing Contact Data" shows a contact dialog where one can enter a so named "Tag" what is described as category. However, this field is not visible in my application. Does anybody know what is wrong? Best regards Dirk |
