I am not a fan of top posting, to say the least, and would like to remove the useless copy of a previous mail trail at the end of a message received before archiving it. Is there an easy way to do this?

It's not ideal, perhaps, but if I really need to do something like this, I use the option to edit a message, then I send it to myself. That copy is the one I archive, and the original can be deleted.

Thanks for the suggestion, but then it appears as an Encapsulated message. The only way I have found to archive an encapsulated message is to export it to disk and import it again. My method is to export the message, edit it and import it again. The advantage is that this does not change the time stamp.

That sounds a really useful suggestion - would you mind writing a full description of the problem and solution on http://userbase.kde.org/KMail/FAQs_Hints_and_Tips ? That way it will be included in translated pages, so reach maximum readership Copy the format of other paragraphs, but don't put in any translate tags (such as <!--T:11-->) as the system does that.
Thanks
