After the update-process from 11.04 to 11.10 the contacts are lost. I also had some problems with KMail, it crashes all the times when started, so I can't open Kontact. Because I didn't use KMail, I removed it. Now Kontact and the calender works. I don't think, this is connected to the KAddressbook-Problem.

I use KDE 4.7.1 Kontact 4.7.2 KAdressbook 4.7.2

kde4-config --localprefix says /home/USER/.kde/ ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf contains 0 B ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/stdvcf is empty. ~/.local/share/contacts/ contains only WARNING_README.txt I don't use Groupware and never did.

I assume the data is still stored in Akonadi because if I search for eMail-addresses, I found them inside

~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ibdata1
~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/akonadi/parttable.ibd
~/.kde/share/apps/nepomuk/repository/main/data/virtuosobackend/soprano-virtuoso
~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer/freebusyurls
~/.kde/share/config/krusaderrc

But there is only akonadi_control.error.old in .local/share/akonadi/ and akonadictl status says

Akonadi Control: running
Akonadi Server: running Akonadi
Server Search Support: available (backend: Virtuoso)

How can I extract my Kontact data? I have backups of /home, /etc, /var, /usr/local and /opt.

KAddressBook will run outside of Kontact. If std.vcf is empty, the contacts can't be found, so you need to look for backups with names like std.vcf_1 until you find one that does have records. Incidentally, a 0 byte std.vcf indicates some corruption, but not caused by the migration - it has happened from time to time for years. Renaming any viable backup file to std.vcf should work.

When I moved to 4.7.2 my std.vcf display did look empty, but on using the menu entry to refresh/update it, the records all displayed correctly. There is always the possibility of distro problems, but I don't see any indication at the moment that this has happened.

Thanks for your help. :) Unfortunately that doesn't work. There are several files in ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/:

~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf
~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf_1
~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf_2
~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf_3
~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf_5
~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf__0

and they are all empty even after copy or rename. I also tried it with several backups, days, weeks and months old. :'(

I assume the data is still stored in Akonadi because if I search for eMail-addresses, I found them inside

~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ibdata1
~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/akonadi/parttable.ibd
~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer/freebusyurls
~/.kde/share/config/krusaderrc

where ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ibdata1 and ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/akonadi/parttable.ibd contain 10 MiB each.
