Way to get back to kmail 1.xx ?

Mon Oct 31, 2011 2:27 pm
Hi ,

I ve been using kde for years and since this is my first post here I would like to congratulate the developers for the hard work all those years .

However I am experiencing huge problem with the latest kmail , all this integration with akonadi and mysql just does not work on my computer . I suffer from cpu load , practically making the system unusable . But even when the cpu load is not that much , the feeling you get when you use kmail is that it works extremely slow .. I will not start a flame about why a mail client would use akonadi and mysql to index stuff , I just want to ask if a version prior to 2.x is available for download and compile (and if there is such a version , will it work on newer kde version) ?

I use kmail on a business environment , email is crucial , but it is totally not working for me now ..

Thank you in advance ...

When/how did kmail2 get installed? When you upgraded to 4.7? If so downgrading to 4.6.x should bring you back to kmail1, of course there might be issues downgrading because of config file discrepancies in other parts of KDE.

It might be helpful if you post your distro and KDE version

Hi ,

This is a fresh install of Kubuntu 11.10 64bit . I transfered the .kmail/share/apps/kmail directory from a backup of my home dir and then run kmail . I have also manually updated the kmail folders using F5 . I am not talking about downgrading my kde , I just may be able to just compile an older version of kmail ...

Thank you ..

KDEPIM 4.6 has executed some, if not all, of the Akonadi migration plan.
KDEPIM 4.5 seems to not have been ever released.
KDEPIM 4.4 should be what you want.

Clone this repository and checkout the KDE/4.4 branch,
http://quickgit.kde.org/?p=kdepim.git&a=summary

Or source tarball:
ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/4.4.5/src

In theory, KDEPIM should work with any kdelibs and kdepimlibs 4.4 or later version.

You are suggesting that I should only compile kdepim 4.4 to solve this problem ? And have to do that every time a update from my distro overwrites the kdepim files ?

Yes, kdepim 4.4 has the old kmail. It should not be overwritten since you shouldn't have the distro version installed.

If you do want to have the distro and compiled version installed at the same time, install to a different prefix (e.g. /opt/kmail) and set the environment variable
KDEDIRS=/opt/kmail:/usr in a script in ~/.kde/env.

immortalgr, I am running kontact on 64 bit kubuntu without any problem. I imported my backed up kmail directory to recover my old emails. I also updated to kde 4.7.2 as detailed here:

http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-platform-workspaces-and-applications-472

The akonadi tray was causing problems for me, so I killed it and prevented it running at startup by searching for and deleting all akonaditray.desktop files on the system.

After this all works fine. Is there anything special about your setup - do you have a huge number of emails, and what sort of akonadi resources are you using?

Hi ,

I don't have something special in my setup , I do however have a big number of emails (using maildir format for most of my folders) . The akonadi resources I was using (sorry could not stay longer with kmail , switched to thunderbird) were the ones created from kmail after the upgrade took place . I might try to compile kdepim 4.4 the way dpalacio suggested ...
